Lauder of Sydney 19th century

Journal by Lulu19

Hi Markay,

The name in my Grandmother and Great Grandmother\'s name is Lauder, apparently it is sometimes Lander.
I have similar problems with my family name, which is not Lauder, apparently the misconception is due to those making the record, have trouble understanding the persons accent. My grandmother was born in 1895, birth recorded in Windsor. Her mother was born a Lauder and Married a Maver, he either died, or they were divorced,
there is a mystery here and I would really love to solve it. There is a birth and death recorded for a Christina Maver, it appears it was a still birth in 1876. That I found out today, and it was in Victoria.

My grandmother born in Windsor, grew up in Marrickville and lived in Balmain. My knowledge of her family history is sketchy at best. I feel there was no love lost between her family the Popplewells and the Lanes, the family into which she married. She had 5 siblings, and was the last child.

Thank you for your input

The father of Lauder MAVER (above) was Christopher Lauder MAVER born in Deniliquin in 1875 and died 1956 in Petersham. He was the son of
George MAVER 1838-1919 and Elizabeth Rose LAWRENCE; other children born to this couple in Deniliquin, were Andrew Lawrence MAVER 1870. died 1904; Jane Laurence MAVER, 1872; Elizabeth MAVER, 1874 also a George Lawrence who died in Deniliquin in 1959
Daily Advertiser (Wagga Wagga, NSW) Fri 15 Aug 1919
The death occurred on Monday last of Mr. George Maver, at the advanced
age of 81 years.
The late Mr. Maver was born at Edinburgh, Scotland, on March 9, 1838, and was educated at Trinity College, Edinburgh. He came to Australia with his parents in the year 1854, in the sailing ship " Queen of the East," being then only
16 years of age.
For a number of years he followed the mining industry, and in the year 1868 went to Deniliquin, where he settled on the land, and in 1907 came to Coolamon, where he has resided with his son, Mr. Chris. Maver.
Six weeks ago deceased was seized with a paralytic stroke, and from that time, until death relieved him, he suffered severely. Two sons and two daugh-
ters are left, one son having pre-deceased him, viz., Messrs. George
(Deniliquin), Chris. (Coolamon), Mesdames Watson (Coolamon), and Jeffries (Tasmania).
The funeral left the residence of Mr. Chris. Maver, "Inverleith," deceased's late residence, on Wednesday, for the Presbyterian portion of the Coolamon

Christopher married Alice Maud Eliza COATES in 1902 at Moama on the border. Their children were: Muriel 1905; Christina Lauder 1907; Francis G. 1909; Christopher A. 1911; Harold W. 1914.the last 2 born at NARRANDERA. Then Neil Stanley MAVER was born in Rushworth in 1903

Hi janilye,
Thanks for the information, still a long way to go to solving my family mystery.
The first name mentioned Lauder Christine because of the year 1945,
my grandmother was born in 1895, long before that. The second message however has a more positive lead, as he was born 20 years before my grandmother, and interestingly died in Petersham, an area near where my grandparents lived. Somewhere along the way, Christina Lauder Maver married my great grandfather Popplewell. I would ldeally like to have information about that marriage, the date of death of Christina Lauder Popplewell was she still living when her daughter Christina died. aged 30 in 1925 of tuberculosis, her husband died 4 years later.

by Lulu19 on 2017-05-11 05:19:20

Another thing, my great grandmother's name was Christina Lauder Maver, then Popplewell. Your first lot of information does not match her. Lauder apparently was always the second name of any girl in the Lauder family named Christina, when they married. My grandmother has a niece named Christina Lauder Popplewell, the tradition was not carried into my mother's generation or mine. Rather disappointed as I rather like the name Christina

Thanks janilye for your info of 12 May, re Popplewell/Maver marriage, I now feel I am actually lifting the mist about the above marriage. The one thing I would really love to know now, is if there any descendants of the above union living who could give me knowledge handed down about my grandmother Christina Lauder Lane, nee Popplewell.

Hi Janilye

Thanks again for yet another very useful piece of information, I didn't know my grandmother was buried in Woronora cemetery.

I know David Popplewell had a daughter Christina Lauder Popplewell, however not if my grandmother's siblings had children, what would be great is if there were grandchildren still around, I have only one photo of my grandparents, nothing about their wedding, or if they had nieces and nephews.
I am so impressed and grateful that you have the information you have kindly passed on to me. I know my grandmother's birth was registered in Windsor; I am still wondering however, why my great grandmother's name was Christina Lauder Popplewell, your earlier information said she was born a Maver,so why was her middle name Lauder? Was my great great grandmother perhaps a Lauder? Hope I am not testing your patience.

by janilye on 2017-05-14 05:51:29

I'm not related to this family and knew nothing about it till you published this journal. So, I also have only just begun to search.
Now, Peter Maver 1835-1893 The father of Christina Maver who married POPPLEWELL in 1882. HIS MOTHER was CHRISTINA LAUDER and she married JOHN MATTHEW MAVER in Edinburgh and they came to Melbourne in 1854 on the "Queen of the East" (see George MAVER's Obituary) as it says George was 16 born in 1835 so Peter was 3 years younger.

Funeral Notice.
FRIENDS of Mr. J. M. MAVER are respectfully invited to meet at his residence, this afternoon, for the purpose of following the remains of his late wife Cristine,to the place of interment in the New Cemetery. The procession to move from Eden Cottage, at four o'clock precisely.
BRAMSTON and MARSHALL, undertakers, 90 Collins-street east, and 88 Gertrude-
street, Collingwood.
this is the parents of George and Peter MAVER and possibly a william and Andrew K MAVER

It appears to me that George MAVER named a son Christopher Lauder Maver and Christopher Lauder Maver named his daughter Christina Lauder Maver (married-COTTRELL-DORMER) and Peter MAVER named his daughter Christine Lauder Maver (married POPPLEWELL)
Now, just to add to the mix, there was also William MAVER a plumber who lived in 58 Abercrombie Street, Redfern when he died 7 February 1907. He married Bridget Sullivan in Melbourne in 1868 and they also named their daughter Christine Lauder MAVER b. 1876 and his son John Matthew MAVER 1882 after his father. Then there was Andrew MAVER, he married Anne Jane WILSON in St. Leonards in 1882 they had a daughter Christina as well but not with the Lauder.

I haven't put together a tree (I'll leave that to you)
But, I would start with John Mathew MAVER b. c1798 and Christine LAUDER b. c1815 Edinburgh

These funeral notices will help you with your family research.
You have George's and I don't see one for Peter.
However, I did find a Peter MAVER who spent some time in gaol for perjury.(1867) It had to do with a desk he claimed to own and a woman named Maria Green whom he was living with and whom was charged with stealing said desk. The whole story in with the Public Records Office.

Hi janilye,
The information you sent, re Maver death, wasn't relevant to my Popplewell/Lauder searching, as it is beyond my time frame. Many thanks for all previous information. I found out today that my great uncle Ranville Ashmore Bullaise Popplewell, married however had no children, he was uncle to nieces and nephews, one of whom, Fred Edward Popplewell married in 1945 a Patricia Cowden, at Rockdale. The year before I was born, so I would really really love to know if he had children, who would be my age. I spent the morning at Mitchell Library finding the snippet of information above. The really interesting thing is, the Popplewells lived in the same area as my paternal ancestors, plus another branch of my maternal ancestors, it was indeed a small world back then.

by Lulu19 on 2017-05-17 05:08:39

Hi Janilye,

Words fail me, for someone who is not related to the Popplewell family you really have excelled with the information you have given me. I was beginning to feel a little bewildered with the number of Edwards in the Popplewell family
and the Christinas with Lauder in their name. Atleast I now know who the original Lauder was. I thought maybe there was a connection with Sir Harry though that possibility is to say the least remote! Definitely not Estee, she changed her name to Lauder. All those Mavers! My American friend will indeed be interested.

You have indeed been so thorough you put my efforts to shame! Life is strange isn't it, the two sides of my family both have ancestors in Windsor, one of them at one stage owned the Watercourse Pub. There are Jurds, Walkers, Popplewells and Lanes all living in the same area. There are Walkers on both sides and one of them a young policeman, actually shot Thunderbolt after a confrontation in which Thunderbolt advised him to leave because he would be killed! Again I can't thank you enough for all the information you have given me. I found a website for Wilberforce settlement some days ago, which actually listed all the families living at the settlement, I didn't make a note of them and yesterday no amount of trying brought it back! Damn it!!!

hi janilye,
Thanks for the info.

I am hopeful that you may be able to assist me in another matter on the other side of my family- My ancestor was Daniel Edward Jurd born in London on 23 July 1780, his parents were Richard and Elizabeth Jurd who were married at St James Church in London at Dukes Place. Whilst I have a plethora of information about his transportation to New South Wales, his subsequent marriage and his large family. However I know very little about his family in England. Some years ago I did a flurry of searching, and one interesting fact emerged. there was a Robert Jurd, on the Great Order of the Pipe in the reign of Henry III the year 1209. My Daniel and his father were chimney sweeps in London; what happened to the Jurds in the years between 1209 -1780 intrigues me to say the least. Then there was a family of Jurds in Switzerland from 1576 to 1592 a family of 10 children, the second last one being Daniel! There are Jurds in France, who traced back to Alsace, round about the time of the French Revolution. I am just curious to know just how far back, Daniel's family can be traced. The name is not English in origin, not German, possibly Swedish. I obviously do not have the tools you possess, not having software available, and being on an I-Pad does limit me somewhat. As I said yesterday,I am extremely grateful for the information and help you have given me.

by Lulu19 on 2017-07-26 01:10:32

Is there anyone out there that knows anything about the Swiss Jurds,
the father was Jakob, the mother Margreth, they had 10 children two of whom died young. I would love to to know if Jakob Jurd was born elsewhere and came to Switzerland, the family lived in Vordemwald in 1576, their last child was born in 1592. Apparently there are no longer any Jurds in Switzerland, just where did they go? Or, from whence did they come?

Jakob and Margreth were married on16th January 1576 either in Interlaken or Vordemwald. In my DNA results, Switzerland is one of the countries listed.
Any information at all will be gratefully received.

by janilye on 2017-07-26 14:38:57

Make another journal for the JURDS, Lulu19.. Otherwise, only people who know of Lauder of Sydney will bother to open this.
You never know someone might have some information.

Hi Janilye,

Being a complete dunce, how do I go about opening another Journal?
