Ledbetters come from Germany before England?

My father was a Ledbetter and our DNA (by brother) shows we come down from Arthur Ledbetter (1740)...Henry Cupp Ledbetter. My sister says she had been told by both our father and an uncle that the Ledbetters came from Germany to England before coming to the colonies. Is that a possibility or is that totally incorrect?
