LEVY of Auckland, Ponsonby, Palmerston North

Journal by PollyB

I am searching for descendents of Philip LEVY of Union Hotel Queen Street Auckland (ex Hobart Convict). Married to Leah LAZARUS and father to Lewis Lyons LEVY, Asher Levy, Sarah Levy and Isaac Levy.

He was sent to Hobart in 1829 on the Mary (2) and there is no record of his marriage to Leah LAZARUS who arrived in 1836 on the Boadicea with presumably her sister Julia. Lewis' birth is registered on his brothers' birth certificate as apparently Philip was not aware of the law at the time. His Hebrew name is Yehuddah Eleazer HaLevi and Leah's is daughter of Isaac.

They left their Liverpool Street shop in Hobart around 1850 and Philip took up the lease on the Union Hotel in Queen Street Auckland. He died in 1865 and is buried in the Jewish Section of Symmonds Street Cemetery (Karangahape Cemetery?).

Sarah his daughter married Henry Moss JACOBS of Old Tapu near Hastings Gold Mining area, and had the lease on the Exchange Hotel at Tapu. He ia buried in the Old Tapu Cemetery. She remarried George BUDGE.

Lewis Lyons Levy married Jane GOODISSON in 1875 at Wanganui. They had Lewis (jnr), Philip and Leah.

I know not what became of Asher or Isaac LEVY. Any help would be appreciated.
