Lewis Benjamin 'Ben' EWEN was born about 1856, the son of Charles and Isabella who arrived in Tamahere in 1873, taking up farming. Ben enrolled in the Cambridge Cavalry Volunteers in May 1875 and served for four years. He married Margaret Ann Cecil Smith at St Stephens, Tamahere on 4 July 1881 and they farmed and raised their children at Matangi.
