Looking for Alice Allen nee Thornbury and her daughter Sarah Jane Allen

Query by edls63

I am researching my family tree and one of the branches is the Allen family in Australia. I am trying to find out what happened to Alice Allen born abt 1830 in Armagh Ireland (parents Robert Thornbury/Thornberry & Ann Hewitt) who married George Allen born abt 1833 in Armagh, Ireland (parents George Allen & Ruth Redmond). They married in Victoria, Australia in 1854. George died in 1870 and I am trying to find out what happened to Alice. I can't seem to find a death registration in the indexes or any death notice in trove.

They had three children. Anne Belle 1856-1860, William George 1858-1940 (who married Margaret Minahan) and Sarah Jane. I have been unable to trace Sarah Jane. I can'y find a death notice or mention in index.

Can anyone help me find what happened to this mother and daughter? Please ;)

Thanks Lisa

This Marriage and Death may interest you.

Bride: Alice ALLEN - born Armagh

Died: 1888 in Box Hill, Victoria
Age: 64 years
Father: Robert THORNBY

I think this will be your Alice.

I thought is would be too but according to her marriage certificate I have her father is Robert Thornbury (and it could be a typo) but Alice's mother is Ann Hewett so the mothers don't match up. I can find any match on ancestry or any extra info on trove that might help either.

I recently got Alice Berger's death certificate and the parents were correct on it (The index is incorrect) but no first marriage or children are listed. She is in a grave by herself.
I then got the marriage certificate and parents are once again correct and it states she was a widow in 1870 which matches up. The number of living and dead children also match. So I am pretty sure it is her.

I thought you might be interested in the notice below published 1 July 1853 in the personal advertisements section of the Sydney Morning Herald:
“IF this should meet the eye of William Bunting, George Allen, or Joseph Linton, who came out to Port Phillip in the ship Jane Pratt, the former will hear from his brother-in-law, ALEXANDER ROBINSON, by addressing a Letter No. 5, Swan-street, Sydney.”
William’s sister Martha had married Alexander Robinson and they had arrived in Sydney soon after 16 year old William and his associates George Allen & Joseph Linton who were also likely from Kilmore area (friends, maybe relatives – at least known to William’s sister). They had gone to Port Phillip instead.

William and Martha were from Crewcat township, located between Richhill and Kilmore. William was born 1836, and Martha 1831.There is a fair chance this is your George Allen. Where did he go after Melbourne? William went to the Longwood-Ruffy area of NE Vic.

Earlier, I had found a George Allen whom I had thought could be immigrant George's father located at Shewis townland (located just west of Richhill)from 1833-1850s.

In 1833 he is at Shewis.

Around 1850 (for Kilmore) Griffiths Valuations has him still at Shewis.

Let me know please if helpful, or if already known. In your research have you previously seen mention of the Linton name? I descend from William.

Thanks Frank

I have not come across the Linton name as yet but so far my research has mainly been based in Australia and decadency rather than ancestry. George's Parents are George Allen (snr) (?-1870) and Ruth Redmond (?-1885).

I have been able to trace George Allen (jnr)(?1833-1870) and his many siblings who came out from Armagah Ireland with their parents. George did have a sibling Martha (?b. 1945) but she married James Harvey Randall Noble.

George jnr married in Australia and I am pretty sure a while after his death his wife Alice (?1830-1888) married Ernest Edward Berger (?-1909).

I have successfully traced two of George & Alice's children, Anne Belle (died as a child) and William George, but still have not been able to identify what happened to their daughter Sarah Jane Allen who was born in 1855 in Victoria Australia.

Hi Lisa,

This Allen family was from Ardrea townland, Armagh (commonly written as Ardray or Ardrey) which makes your George Allen b. 1834 almost certainly the one who came with my William Bunting ancestor on the Jane Pratt (wrongly recorded there as "Jno") in 1852 to Melbourne. William Bunting's father (John) was raised from a baby by his aunt Sarah Taylor nee Bunting who was from the Ardrea area and the families remained close. Cousins were more like siblings!

William's brother Edward (who went to Qld on the Caroline in 1853) married Mary Jane Courtney/Courtenay whose mother was Elizabeth Noble, a name I see amongst your Allens.

George and Alice Thornbury Allen's son William George Allen was born 1858 on the goldfields (Pleasant Creek via Stawell). Do we know where they were married in 1854? The 1856 Electoral rolls (e.g. on Ancestry) will likely capture our George, but there are several possibilities recorded, incl. some on goldfields. Do we know when his parents George and Ruth arrived in Vic?
I will be in the Ardrea area in 3 weeks time, if that is any help to you.

William's grandfather was musician Anthony Bunting, brother (and music teacher) of famous Edward Bunting 1773-1843. Find him on Wiki for instance.

I saw you found your Sarah Jane Allen - this looks right:
