DANIEL's DEATH notice from the West Coast Times 25 Jul 1900

DEATH - CULLEN, At his residence, Three Mile, Wednesday, July 25, Daniel Cullen. Aged 64 years

DANIEL's OBITUARY from the New Zealand Tablet 2 August 1900:

Mr DANIEL CULLEN, THREE MILE, WESTLAND
... Yet another well-known and respected West Coaster (writes a Hokitika correspondent) has passed away in the person of Mr. Daniel Cullen, of the Three Mile Hotel, Westland, who breathed his last on July 25. For many years in the early days Mr Cullen carried on an extensive grocery business in Hokitika, (Revell street) but vicissitudes of fortune and dull times compelled him to relinquish his business in town and seek rest and quiet living as hotel and store keeper at Three Mile, where he resided until his death. He leaves a wife and family to mourn their loss - R.I.P.

NOTE
Daniel & Caroline had a son on 2 June 1891
They named him Onslow Cranwell Phillip Cullen
- From the 'Otago Witness' on 24 Jan 1895
... Whilst passing through the Three-mile yesterday I was introduced to little Lord Onslow, a five-year old son of Mr Daniel Cullen of that place. The baby boy having been born on the same day as that on which Huia, (real name Victor Alexander Herbert Huia ) son of the illustrious Earl (William Hillier Onslow, 4th Earl of Onslow), first saw the light, the parents called him Lord Onslow Cullen. In recognition of the fact, Lord Onslow sent his littlest namesake two handsome volumes bearing his autograph, and entitled "The Book of Days"
- Onslow Cullen was KILLED IN ACTION at Armentieres, Somme, France on 16 June 1916 aged 25
- he enlisted from Pakaraka, Bay of Islands
- his Next Of Kin was his brother Baniel Cawkwell Cullen (1885-1951)
- this Daniel married Catherine BRICK in 1920
- another brother, William Daniel Cullen died aged 3 (1881-1884)
- a sister Ivy Muriel Cullen (1886-1061) married Daniel MULLIN in 1910, married Frederick WARNER in 1919

Ngairedith thank you so much for information on Daniel & Onslow Cullen. I have downloaded Onslow's Cenotaph record for my files.
Ivy Muriel Cullen (my grandmother) was divorced in December 1917 from Daniel Mullen. They had 3 children one of who was my mother.
I have managed to trace Caroline Cullen nee Cawkwell family back to Abt. 1601.
I now seem to have hit a brick wall with Cullen's. The only information I have is that Daniel came from County Donegal, Ireland with his brother James.
Any further information would be appreciated.
Many thanks Colleen

Kia ora, Ivy Cullen was my great Grandmother. Her and Fred's daughter Joan Dormer (née Warner) was my Grandmother. I recall my mother speaking to me of how her grandfather Fred would tell all sorts of wild stories when she was a child.
