Looking for Edward Daley born 1901 Liverpool

Query by AED48

I am looking for my grandfather Edward Daley. He was born in Liverpool prison 28/2/1901 and was raised in Liverpool He was a merchant seaman, trained as a cook/baker. He had brothers; James, William, John Samuel, Clifford and Wilfred H and sisters Mary Agnes, Ellen and Grace. I have good records of him up to late 1933 when he signed on to sail on cargo vessel SS Otira from London to Australia. After that very little. The story handed down is he became Chief Steward on P & O but left ship in Sydney sometime after 1934 never to be heard of again. He was 6' 2" tall and had a crossed swords and heart tattoo on his right arm. Any possible information that might help would be appreciated.

Thanks Wizard. You have the correct family in the 1911 census and I have traced the family back to the 1851 census when both Father and Mother (Doolan) are listed as having been born in Ireland. I havent tried to find then in any Irish records as yet.

I have looked for death records for ED in Australia but no joy as yet.

I have found some of his Merchant Seaman tickets in The National Archives that list his ships up to late 1933 (SS OTIRA) including the Waiwera in 1922.

I am currently following up on P & O records (held in The National Archives) and plan a visit in person to Archives when I am visiting UK in July.

A 1 month old Edward with mother Agnes ~30 appears twice on 1901 census. His birth certificate confirms where he was born, so I conclude that whoever filled out census forms at Briarwood Road in 1901 told porkies!

Agnes was inside for "stealing 50 yards of Holland". Haven't had time yet to pursue further.

Current focus is finding Edward after early 1934. Found an E Daley killed on HMS Orion 1941 but dont think it is him. He would have been late 30s when WWII started which is probably too old to join RN then.

Otherwise a brick wall! Am in process of following up on his siblings. Maybe that will give me a lead?

So thought I would give FTC a try too?

Thanks again for your assistance.

You could try Liverpool central library achieves they hold a lot of records for seamen. Not sure if its online or not. I have used it in the past, I live about 7 miles west of Liverpool.
You might find the last ship he sailed on.
