Florence Agnes Wright 1885-1936 married Ernest William Colebank CLITHEROW. It was her first marriage and his second.
Ernest was born in 1865 in Holborn, Middlesex, England, the son of comedian and actor William CLITHEROW born 0n 25 October 1838 in St Anne, Soho, London and I'm not sure when he died but it was in London around 1910. He toured with some theatre was in Melbourne, Sydney and I think New Zealand. Sorry I'm being vague but I'm away at the moment. He had 2 wives but Ernest's mother was actress Elizabeth Ann COLEBANK born in Pimlico, London in 1844. They married in 1864, the marriage did not last for she married again in 1876.
Their children including Ernest were:-
1.William Henry Clitherow 1864 ? 1864
2.Ernest William Colebank Clitherow 1865 ? 1921 first marriage to Petronella 'Nellie' D'Ark in Hong Kong 1894 They were both with the same travelling show. Then married your Florence Agnes in Capetown
3.Flora Bessie Constance Clitherow 1867
4.Lilian Jane Clitherow 1870 ? 1902 buried in Calcutta
5.Maud Annie Martha Clitherow 1872 ? 1934
I'm sorry I don't have a chance to look now but I'm sure there is a lot online about W F Clitherow and the family.

Thank you so much.
I do know about Ernest and his family as he was my great grandfather.
I do not know about Florence Wright. From what I have read, which is all very conflicting, she was born in Melbourne. She married Ernest at 16. What was she doing in Cape Town? The birth certificate of her first born in 1903 states that she was 24!!
I would dearly love to know where Florence came from and how she married Ernest within months of his first wife and baby son dying in Bangkok.
Thanks for your help.
Are you related to this family?

by janilye on 2012-02-28 03:56:21

No I'm not related at all I have read about the family in the past.
Yes Nellie and the baby died of Cholera in 1901
I have no idea about Florence. Maybe Florence was in the show?? Very young. Perhaps he met her family when he was travelling about?? Or perhaps she was South African and her family wanted her out of there because of the unrest.
I think the worst part of it all was he had 3 other children to Nellie. Norah 6 and her brother Victor Ernest 5 he left with the Sisters of Nazareth in South Africa, they both died there in 1974 and Beatrice 2, he put up for adoption in Melbourne. His father was living in Melbourne in 1901, that's probably why he came here.
He did go back to South Africa in 1914. I don't think he was there very long.
I just found William CLITHEROW on the 1911 British Census. So he died after that.
Good luck. what does Florence's death certificate say?

Thanks again for replying.
Beatrice was my grandmother and the reason I started the family tree.
Just for the record Victor was born 30 August 1895 and Norah in October 1896 - we now have the birth certificates.
It was all very shocking. I am trying to find out when and why my grandmother came to Australia. It was an astounding coincidence that she was adopted by the family that bought the marionette show from Nellie and her siblings!!The same one that Ernest represented!!
The death certificate of Florence Agnes says that she was born in Victoria and lived there all her 50 years!!We know she was in Adelaide for 5 and Broken Hill for at least 15!! It also states that her first husband was Albert Ernest Clitherow, which of course was her son's name.
Thank you and happy hunting.
