DEATH.

Name: Selina Beatrice LUCAS.
Died: 1959 Bentley, Victoria.
Age: 82 years.
Father: Frederick GREEN.
Mother: Frances Elizabeth MASON.
Ref: Registry of Deaths Victoria. Reg #15855.

It is strange Selina married under the maiden name of LOTT
and not her birth name of GREEN.

Unable to locate a birth or death for John Henry James LUCAS.
Birth and death may have been recorded under different given names.
Do you have the parents of John's parents?

John and Selina had four children and Selina's maiden name was
always recorded as LOTT.

by tonkin on 2015-02-05 20:19:43

Correction.
Do you have the names of John's parents?

by Mazzie49 on 2015-02-05 21:32:08

It is all a bit of a mystery. We believed that Selina Beatrice was a Lott, we didn't
Find out that she was a Green until a relative started to look into the family. We knew her mother France's had left her husband and come to Melbourne, but Selina who was my grandmother always told us she was the youngest child and her mother took her with her when she left.
Obviously, that was not the whole story.

I know that John, Selina's husband was born at Point Lonsdale and died in 1929 from WW1 related illness. I found his details in the Australian archives. His father was also John and was born in Wellington, New Zealand in 1849, he died in Queensland sometime in the 1920's. I have been unable to locate his death certificate.

by tonkin on 2015-02-05 22:40:03

I had an idea who this John Henry James was but needed a few more details from you.
These are John's birth, death and marriage details.

BIRTH.

Name: James Henry LUCAS.
Born: 1874 North Melbourne, Victoria.
Father: John LUCAS.
Mother: Elizabeth Jessie CARFIELD.
Ref: Registry of Births Victoria. Reg #17138.

DEATH.

Name: James Henry LUCAS.
Died: 1929 Northcote, Victoria.
Age: 55 years.
Father: John LUCAS.
Mother: Elizabeth Jessie CARFIELD.
Ref: Registry of Deaths Victoria. Reg #6737.

MARRIAGE.

Groom: John Henry James LUCAS.
Birth place: Given as St Leonards.
Bride: Selina Beatrice Green LOTT.
Birth place: Given as Carlton.
Year married: 1904.
Place: Victoria.
Ref: Registry of Marriages Victoria. Reg #1649.

It appears James Henry LUCAS decided to call himself John Henry James LUCAS when he married Selina. He was also recorded as John Henry James LUCAS in the birth records for his children.

Can you tell me where John and Selina are buried?

by Mazzie49 on 2015-02-05 23:14:34

Selina and John are both at the Boroondarra Cemetary, previously known as Kew Cemetery, in Victoria.

by tonkin on 2015-02-06 00:00:29

Thank you.
I've been looking for the burial of 'James' Henry LUCAS.
He was buried as 'John' Henry LUCAS.
Just goes to show names recorded on death records vary from names recorded in the cemetery records.

Hi, If you read John Henry James Lucas's medical record he did not die from war related illness. The following are some of the notes on his form. The family believed that Mr Lucas was "gassed" but this was not true.
“Developed miner’s disease 8 years ago and had to change occupation but has had pleurisy during the last two years and as often as four times. On arriving in England developed cough and pains in chest. He has had several haemoptysis in past two years.” 10/05/1918
“Tuberculosis of lung aggravated by climate condition since arriving in England.”
“Weight 9 stone 6 lbs…. Cough especially in mornings. Right lung moves badly. Breathing all over emphy__atious in type especially at Rt Apex with some occasional moist sounds in the area behind. No bacteria found in sputum 03/01/1918.”
“Before enlistment had pleurisy. While in England got cramps in all muscles. Sent to hospital with rheumatism. Coughed copious amount of phlegm. Slight haemoptysis three times. … Suffered from night sweats but has not had any lately. Family history good. Appetite improving.”
His headstone can be found at http://discoveringanzacs.naa.gov.au/browse/gallery/2461.

Thanks,, I was aware of the medical record. Obviously, to save face the "gassed" card was used. My father had always believed his father had been gassed, so it was a surprise when I learned the truth. If you have any other info I would be very interested
