Looking for George Gardiner Whitlow

Journal by Ricksil26

My great grand father George Gardiner Whitlow, born Dec 1831 Manchester, England.

He came to Victoria, but I have no records of what ship he was on etc.

He married Alice McLachlan in the gold mining town of Walhalla in 1869.

She was born in Hobart, Tasmania in 1849.

She died in Walhalla in 1874.

George then married my great grand mother Theresa Holdsworth Beard in 1876 in Walahalla.

My nan Minnie Theresa Frances (1 of 7 children) was born in 1877 in Walhalla.

I would like to know whether George arrived as a convict in Hobart, Tasmania, where he might have met Alice.

Hope you can help me with my research, cheers Rick Silverwood.

Going to a meeting of some of his many great grandchildren today. He was a "Remittance Man" which term I understand to mean he was paid an allowance by family back in England to emigrate to the colony and presumably to stay here. Bound to be a story behind all that but the cousins I've met haven't heard anything of it - possibly it was never spoken of.
My maternal grandmother was George's and Theresa's daughter, sister of Minnie, Mabel etc
Theresa was born at the site of St Francis of Assisi church in Lonsdale St Melbourne very son after her mother disembarked from the ship from England. George was also on that ship aged 20. Lots of info I don't have but hope to find out more.
Walhalla ground to a halt when the twin boys were born, descendants of one of whom I am meeting with soon. Better get going.
