Looking for Grandfather

Query by lmbehm

While interested in my family tree in general, I really would like to track down my grandfather on my dad's side.

His name is/was Frank N. Halstead, Jr. (I have seen it with 2 Ls.). He deserted my dad's family in about 1927. I that he was still alive in 1945 when his brother died and living in New York City according to the Penn Yan, NY paper.

Might be worth trying to trace his brother's family. Perhaps they learn't something more about him when he turned up at the funeral. I know it's a long time ago but something may have been passed on down through the family. You have the father's name try and find out the mother's name from them. might aid in a search for a certificate.

It might other than the fact that there is no one left in his brother's family. His daughter died last year.

Thanks for the suggestion - it might work for some other family members.

Hi Leslie,

I know it is tough trying to track someone down when you do not have much information to work with. May I suggest that if you could give us information on your father...only if he is deceased, it will give us an idea where your family lived, etc.

There is a social security index record for Frank N. Halstead,
born 26 Jun 1900, died Mar. 1993, Santa Barbara, California??

If you live in the area of where your father was born, have you visited the cemetery, or called them to see if there are any Halstead's there. From the death date from the cemetery, you could look up the obit in the paper (or contact the library, or email them) to see the obit. If you could find your Great Grandparents obit, and they list their children, and your father's name is listed, and place, than you can look for other information to verify and prove the information.

I had an experience in my research that I found a border crossing for one of my relatives. I found that she was going to visit a daughter in the United States, and I knew it was her as he mentioned the next of kin that was her son, and the correct address. From the border crossing, I than looked for her death record, and obit, and found more clues from those. Each bit of information that you receive can help to verify that you are on the right tree, or have the riht person.

I hope that researching the Halstead family that you will find information on this family that will help heal the hurt that your Grandfather caused his family.

I am responding to your request for information with a desire to help and do not wish to offend in anyway.

Be patient, but do not give up in your research.

Familysearch.org is a great site to look at.

No offense taken. I am new at starting this type of research.

Both my parents are deceased.
My father was born in 1924 in Scranton, PA. His siblings, also deceased, were born in 1907 (Robert Hallstead), 1909 (John Hallstead), 1921 (1920 according to SS Death Index)(Mary Hallstead).

Grandfather apparently deserted the family between 1909 and coming back in about 1920.

Robert Hallstead died in 1967 in Winnipeg, Canada.
John Hallstead died Tarpon Springs, FL in 1987.
Mary Hallstead Brown (Jesse Brown) died in Burdett, NY 2 Jul 2001.

Supposedly after Grandma moved the family back to NY (Ithaca, Slaterville Springs), she wanted to remarry and tired to have Grandfather declared dead. Some of his family provided proof he wasn't and paid her off.

As far as I can ascertain there is no one cemetery Hallsteads are buried in - the list of people in the one in Scranton does not include my grandfather's generation.

His brother was buried in Penn Yan as best I can figure out.

Have not found much on his sister (Margaret Hallstead) married Russell Louis Park.

Given I am pretty certain on his birth date from census records, I don't think the one in CA is him. His wife (Elizabeth Burgess) lived 1886-1974. Born in Ithaca area.

Grandfather attended Cornell University but never graduated. My sister was able to verify that information.

Thanks for the help. It can be frustrating when you can find info on all but the person you really want to find.
