Looking for Harper, Bray, Blandthorn and Munro from England to Australia

Query by VeronicaF

Hi this is my first entry. I came across this site today after posting a reply. What a great site! My name is Veronica and I am in West Australia.
I am researching Henry James Harper born 1812 Bere Alston, Devon christened 6 Sep 1812 at Calstock, Cornwall. This has been a huge brickwall now broken. From his death certificate his parents names were listed as Stephen Harper and Mary Marks. His parents were actually Samuel Harper and Mary Testick who were married at Redruth 26 Nov 1804. They had a large family with children ending up in NZ, Aust and USA some remained in England.
Henry and his first wife Harriet Floyd and 3 children William, Charlotte and Mary Ann travelled on the ship "William Bryan in 1841 and settled initially at Taranake, NZ. After Harriets death in 1845 the family sailed to Adelaide, South Australia where Henry married Ellen Bray in 1848.(My line). Another brickwall. Previous research by another family member had Ellen's parents as James Trewartha Bray (brother of William (Billy)Bray the evangelist) and an Ann on the family tree. I did some extensive research on this line to find this couple not her parents! I was very disappointed because I love the sound of the name James Trewartha Bray it has a certain ring to it.
The mystery was finally broken when it was revealed Ellen is buried in the same grave at Bendigo as her brother Ambrose. The burial plot was originally paid for by Ellen's daughter Sarah Crammond. Henry Harper is buried at Welshmans Reef, Victoria.
Now I'm rambling.
Thanks for a great site Scott.

Who do you have as Ellen's parents? I have to admit, I've always been keen on the name James Trewartha Bray as well!! How does the burial help with identifying parents and do you have any info on the brother Ambrose?

I have Ellen Bray's parents as William Bray and Ann Barrett married at Parish of Lanivet, Cornwall 23/05/1819 signed by "Their Marks" Witnesses Wm Barrett, John Mannell.
Parents names on Ambrose Bray's Death Certificate as above.
Ambrose died first 20 Jan 1879. The burial plot was purchased by Sarah Crammond (Harper) and her husband George Crammond. An adjoining plot was also purchased. Ellen Harper (Bray) is buried in this plot she died 26 Sep 1888 age 58 (Had 11 children!). Also buried here is George Crammond died 6 Jun 1896 and his wife Sarah Crammond (Harper) died 3 Aug 1943 age 81 and their son Corp James Crammond killed in action in France 19 Jul 1916 age 25. The only name missing from the headstone is Ambrose Bray's however the cemetery has the record that he is buried in this grave.

I believe the following family is Ellen's.
The 1841 Census, Parish of Gwennap, Enumeration District 18, Book 11, folio 13, page 23, Tolcarne,1, has an Ann Bray 55, widow (crossed out) born in county, Josiah Bray, 22, Miner, born in county, William Bray, 19, born in county, James Bray 12, born in county, Ellen Bray 10, born in county and Ambrose Bray 7, born in county.

Ellen is not on any other census' after 1841.

I have not proven yet if Eliza Bray (also on the Cressy) is related ie sister or not. She is certainly not mentioned on the above census.

I will send you a copy of Ambrose's Death Cetrticate unfortunately I cannot put my fingers on it at present. My filing syustem is all over the place.

Henry James Harper (Ellen's husband) is buried at Welshman's Reef, Victoria he died 17 Jan 1877 before Ellen and her brother Ambrose.

Dear Varonica,

I have just come across this site today in my search for info on the Harpers.

I am trying to find details from of the parents of Henry James Harper. As you have stated above I had them as Stephen & Marry.

Can you let me know how you came to find this incorrect and that they are actually Samuel & & Mary Testick.

Hi Scott,

I did not solve this brick wall. Other cousins since met solved this. Ellen Harper (Bray) appears to have been illiterate. On Henry Harper's Death Certificate it is stated his parents as Stephen Harper and Mary Marks. It is thought Ellen was distressed and for Mary Testick's name had it confused and was indicating a mark like a tick. They named their children both Samuel and Stephen with Samuel named first.

From Henry Harper's 1st marriage to Harriet Floyd at Buckland, Monachorum, Devon on 22 March 1834 (no Marriage Certificate as it is before 1837) The OPC confirmed for me Henry's parents as Samuel and Mary. Henry born at Bere Alston and baptised at Calstock Town, Cornwall 6 Sep 1812. Henry's brother Stephen also baptised at Calstock Town, Cornwall.
Calstock, Cornwall, Bere Alston, Cornwall/Devon and Buckland, Monachorum, Devon are all fairly close to each other.

This is what I have:

Samuel HARPER 31 Dec 1775 Towednack, Cornwall - 14 Jul 1836 St Austell, Cornwall Married 26 Nov 1804 at Redruth, Cornwall
Mary TESTICK 05 Jul 1785 at Redruth, CON - 20 Mar 1834 St Austell, Cornwall

Their 12 Children:

Samuel 06 Oct 1805 St Agnes - 04 Jun 1807 St Agnes, Cornwall
Mary 11 Oct 1807 St Agnes
Elizabeth 25 Dec 1810 St Agnes, Cornwall
Henry 06 Sep 1812 Calstock Town, Cornwall 17 Jan 1877 Welshmans Reef, Victoria
Stephen 26 Dec 1813 Calstock Town 01 Oct 1883 Pennington, Dalton Cumbria (Other family members have 1815 1883)
Maria 25 Dec 1816 St Agnes June 1879 St Austell, Cornwall
Jane 1817 1885 Auckland, NZ (Other members of the family have Jane as 1810-1855) (Another family member has Jane at 1816)
John 10 May 1818 St Agnes 26 Jul 1889 Burge, New Zealand
Melinda 1820 - 11 Jun 1878 Auckland, NZ (Other family members - We think Melinda went to N.Z. with her sister Jane and died there but the chap who entered particulars of her death was iliterate. More research to be done).
Sarah 26 Dec 1824 St Austell, Cornwall
James 1825 St Austell 03 Apr 1889 Sacramento, USA
William 08 Mar 1826 St Austell 06 Sep 1913 Cottonville, South Australia

Henry did not give the names of his parents - his illiterate wife Ellen did and has probably got them wrong. Unfortunately the parents names are not stated on the marriage certificate in Adelaide for the marriage to Ellen Bray which would have been great. Henry's baptism is recorded at Calstock and to parents Samuel and Mary.

I am descended from Henry Harper and Ellen Bray through their son John Harper married to Elizabeth Ann Blandthorn.

Hope this is of use.

Regards, Veronica
