I also found these, Newlyn, Cornwall is very close to Penzance. The surname is also spelt Gubbs

Thanks for the responses - I will follow up on them as I am looking for a g.g.grand-father who appeared in South Africa durng the 1850's but we are unable to trace where he originated from. He married in 1857 in South AFrica and died 1882 also SA.
