I'm curious as I have also heard there are Jewish Phillips families in New Zealand. There was talk that perhaps our Phillips family had traveled from Poland to England at some time and on to New Zealand. This never went further than a comment in passing. My Grandfather was David Ian Phillips. I realise that I may not at all be the Phillips family you are seeking. Here is a piece of my Phillips family tree which starts in London 4 November 1790. Best Wishes Katherine Tait (New Zealand)

Hi there,
My Grandfather was Alfred Abraham Phillips and I have heard of the 'jewish' connection and I believe it because of the various jewish names such as Abraham. My Dad was Francis Benjamin Phillips though I'm not sure if my Poppa was born here and I can't recall his Father's name. I don't have dates, sorry:)
Regards

Megan - I would love to make contact. I am in Auckland.

My email: robertivanphillips (at) xtra (dot) co (dot) nz

I have large amounts of data on this family (I am one of more than 600 known descendants of Thomas PHILLIPS and Eliza(beth) DAYLEY (my 2xg-grandparents)who arrived in NZ around 1846/1849 (later most likely) with their son Abraham.

Despite the occasional Jewish name which crops up our ancestors were devout RC.

However, Benjamin's grandfather, Thomas, got himself excommunicated in 1912 when he tried for an anullment of his marriage to Alfred Abraham's mother, Sarah Ruth CURTEIS. Thomas was born in Kaiwharawhara in 1874.

Your great-grandfather, Abraham was baptised "Abram" at the Roman Catholic Church on Sheppey 17 Aug 1845. He and his parents arrived in Wellington. Everyone else was born in New Zealand. Alfred Abraham in Manawatu (Apiti, I believe).

Interestingly, through part of his time in Wellington there was another Abraham PHILLIPS who was a leading light in the foundation of the Wellington Synagogue. Much more illustrious than ours, however, and emigrated to Australia.

It would be great to have you on board and get your information into our master database. You will also have the opportunity to communicate with a host of new cousins in NZ and Australia.

Cheers
Robert
