JOY Family Crest and Name History states origins as being Irish, but first found in Wales.

JOY IS A NICKNAME OF LATIN AND FRENCH ORIGINS. IT IS DERIVED FROM THE LATIN GAUDIA MEANING JOY, FROM WHICH STEMS THE FRENCH NICKNAME JOYE AND THE MODERN FRENCH JOIE AND WAS USED IN THE SAME MANNER AS JOLLY. AFTER ITS INTRODUCTION BY THE NORMANS THE NAME EVOLVED AS A HEREDITARY SURNAME DURING THE MIDDLE ENGLISH PERIOD, CIRCA 13TH CENTURY.
