Looking for KIRK and BROOKS in Wanganui 1850's

Query by Felicity28

I am researching a family from the Wanganui Area in 1800's.
William Matthew KIRK born c 1845 (unknown if NZ or overseas) married (although no record anywhere of cert) Mary Jane BROOKS (born c1853 Wanganui.
This couple went on to live on the East cape at Gisborne and have been found there in the electoral roll from 1890. William Matthew was a storekeeper.
Both died in the Gisborne area.
On William Mathew's death cert there are no parents noted. This is where my problem is, as I have no proof from this point.
Ancestry trees suggest he was from Lanarkshire, England but no proof is given.
Mary Jane's death cert says she was born in Wanganui and lived all her life in NZ. Married in Wanganui to William Matthew KIRK c 1870.
her parents were William BROOKS and Mary Jane nee McSWEENEY. Her father was a storekeeper.
I believe they had at least two children, a son (William Edward) is the person I am researching's GFather.
Any help gratefully appreciated

Hi there. Look at the Gisborne District Council Cemetery database- William Mathew Kirk and Mary Jane are buried at Makaraka Cemetery. There is a picture of the headstone. The inscription reads:

In loving memory of WILLIAM MATHEW KIRK, died 3 October 1912 aged 67 years.
Also JACK KIRK, died 12 January 1891 aged 3 months; also MAY KIRK, died 28 April 1895 aged 19 years.
Also his beloved wife, MARY JANE, died 16 January 1937

I looked for a birth for May Kirk on BDM. Ref. 1876/7254
It looks like Mary Jane Kirk was known as Jane and/or Mary Jane for the births of their children.
There are quite a few parents with the name of Jane/Mary Jane and William Kirk on BDM, but you may be able to narrow down the search for their children?
Hope this helps
Regards

Thank you wizard28 and crawford for your response. This is some of the information I have been able to find. I still have the problem of William Matthew's parents. And Mary Jane's parents. This couple moved from Wellington to Upper Hutt, Lower Hutt then to Gisborne, bearing children along the way. Apparently WM fought in the Maori wars in Whakatane, Waikato and against the Hauhau in Poverty Bay. Dying at 67 years of age. Busy boy!

Lanarkshire, England? Lanarkshire is in Scotland. Have you tried looking for a William Matthew Kirk born c1845 leaving for New Zealand / Australia from Glasgow

No, I haven't. Sometimes it really pays to have proof in regard to what's put on family trees. I hadn't picked that up. Thank you. I wonder if it was meant to be Lancashire?
