Hi Malcolm,

who were some of the descendants and where did they come from/live so that we can trace them back perhaps

where did Mary Ann Eliza Green live?

by malcolm_lind on 2011-08-17 04:49:33

Very good question - I have her Bible presented to her dated 1907 from Rongotea Gospel Hall just a year prior to her death in 3/7/1908 when they shifted from Oroua Downs to Utiku. They moved north to assist their sons in the sawmilling industry in and around Taihape.

Believe originally they settled on a property between Sanson and Mt Stewart and farmed there before farming at Oroua Downs next to the dairy factory. Infact, I believe ethey held the district sports events in their front paddock of the farm near the main road which is now State Highway 1.

She married in 25/12/1873 to John Henry Gibbs probably at Wakefield Nelson where her parents lived, born London either 22/4/1854 or 1855 believe she arrived out from England with her parents to Nelson.

Hi, Yes I am sure it is the same person as the only other sibling I have is Alice Sebastian Green who married Fred Putt and they had three children - Eileen, Carlton Persival and May E. Eileen married Harold Blyde and they had two daughters - Ethnee and Merna. Carlton's birthday 29th May but no year and May 15th May and no year.

Mary Ann Eliza's parents William Green born 6/6/1824 and his wife Sarah Hynds. Believed to live in the Nelson area and we understand Eliza died visiting her parents in Nelson.

Trust this is helpful.

mmm yes, eileen was may's middle name, harold as i got is his middle name, wilfred being first but using middle names as first was common in past - even some my dads siblings did, the branch i've been doing is carltons, his other sister was keitha muriel putt 1889 - died same year, carlton born 29 jul 1892, died 13 aug 1982, may born 15 may 1896 died 1990, all nz of course
i did't have children for may so that's interesting, was that their actual names, ethnee and merna? never heard of those names before

and i did't have parents for mary ann eliza so that is good, maybe find them in census for england - presuming they did't come over in the early pre-census boats

carlton only had a single child, neville dennison putt(28 nov 1922) who married phyllis irene bennett(18 jul 1928), she had a brother ronald george bennett (1926-1998)

carlton married eva gladys voght (1894-1962) then married marion mc kain(no dates)

Very good. Many people are helping each other and this is great.

We have been away this weekend to a family wedding which was just wonderful and have met further family which is neat.

Daughter flying to Liverpool tomorrow for wedding Thursday and then starting work in Buckinghamsire on Monday. So you can see we have been very busy over here in little New Zealand on the other side of the world.

Dad tells me that he remembers the Putt family who were from New Plymouth, Taranaki, New Zealand. He remembers the house so this will now allow me to follow somebody up from down there.

Many thanks .

Regards

i can tell you there were actually at least 2 putt lines in nz, one from devon which is the group i mentioned and another lot from london sort of area - indirectly connected on the tree i've done, i believe both settled in new plymouth, at any rate i do know some of the putts that are alive are still there so it could well be neville or carlton house your dad remembers

Alice Sebastian Green's Carlton was unable to be contacted so I contacted Colin Putt who was very helpful and he has been speaking with Carlton's son Neville who was too busy with his sick wife so Colin spoke with Neville's cousin Ethne Blyde who is 88 years old and remembers my father and his parents at Rongotea near Palmerston North. I am yet to speak with Ethne but at last we are getting somewhere. Thanks.

Neville Putt is my father-in-law... any information I cna help you with ?

Gaewyn

by malcolm_lind on 2012-04-15 19:39:53

Hi Gaewyn,

Have been speaking with Ethne which was helpful as she can remember my grandparents (Charlie Lind and his wife May nee Gibbs niece of Alice Green). Ethne also remembers the family Murray, Douglas, Noel, Dorothy and Beryl all from Rongotea when they use to visit. Douglas (my father) is almost 90 and living in Palmerston North.

I haven't got any of the family of Neville's and am looking forward to just filling some gaps.

You are welcome to e-mail me : malcolm.lind@xtra.co.nz

Regards

Malcolm
