Do you have a copy of James Stephenson Hamilton's birth certificate??

Who were James & Alec parents?

Where was James born??

The best way to find information is through Scotlands People site it is a pay to view but it should give more details, I did a quick check and couldn't find a James S Hamilton in 1867, he may have been registered in 1868.

i dont know who my grandfathers parents were thats what im trying to trace, my grandfather was born in Dublin Ireland and was heir to the family title home in Fairholm, near larkhall in Scotland, he schooled in Rugby and Sandhurst and opted for a career in the military that why he came to be in South Africa, in Africa. i will greatly appreciate it if you can find me more information.

If James Stephenson Hamilton is your grandfathers brother who is your grandfather, Alexander Hamilton?.

How do you know that James is the eldest of nine children born in Scotland?

Do you have names & dates for the other children??

More information on siblings my help trace the right family through the census.

I still think the best way to find out the parents of James Stephenson Hamilton is to purchase his birth certificate, that way you have a definite starting point.

Do you have any documents or address for the "family title home" in Fairholm Larkhall Lanarkshire.

my grand father is Alic Alexander hamilton, i have more information on my grandfathers brother because he was the Kruger National Park game reserve founder and warden and my father used to tell us alot of stories about his uncle. i will try and get my grandfathers date of birth from his grave which is a distance from where i stay. i do not have names of the other children because my grandfather and his brother came with the military to south africa the other children i presume remained in Scotland.

Your grandfather Alexanders marriage certificate should give you more details on his father.

There are some very interesting articles in the Wikipedia online encyclopedia for James Stevenson-Hamilton regarding his life in South Africa and Kruger National Park.

James Stevenson-Hamilton
Born October 2, 1867

They had three children: Margaret (born in 1931), James (born in 1933) and Anne (born in 1935). He died on December 10, 1957 at the age of 90.

The age for Francis in 1881 Census should possibly be 4 months not 4 years as he is 11yrs in 1891 Census and this would match with his birth registration.

a copy of the marriage certificate will give you more details on both James & Fanny.

Interesting that Fanny doesn't appear in the 1880 Cenus, that explains it she died, possibly after complications of birth of Francis, a copy will give you details.

you may have to purchase a copy of Eliza Margaret Grace Hamilton's Birth to get further details on her mother.

Hi Applepeaches, my name is Clare Stevenson-Hamilton and my father-in-law is james Stevenson-Hamilton of Fairholm. I am married to his youngest son, John. You can see the whole family history in Burkes Landed Gentry or Peerage. There are pages and pages of your ancestors in there! Happy reading x

by ClareSH on 2014-01-30 08:43:46

P.S. lots more on the family tree on thepeerage.com

by applepeaches on 2014-01-30 08:55:29

Hi ClareSH, thanks so much for that information, i believe that James steveson got the surname Hamilton from his wife is that true.

by ClareSH on 2014-01-30 11:37:55

Yes - he married Eliza Hamilton (my eldest daughter is named after her) who was heiress to Fairholm and Kirkton estates. As a result the name and coat of arms 'Stevenson-Hamilton' was created. Eliza died quite young and james remarried (twice I think!).

by ClareSH on 2014-01-30 11:41:22

He had 2 children with Eliza (I think) - james (who founded Kruger) and Olmar.
James then married Hilda Cholmondeley and had 3 children - one of whom is the current James S-H.
I guess that your grandfather was a son of James Stevenson by a subsequent wife?
