Do you know where in Scotland William Milligan was born or when he married if in Scotland. It sounds possible he was from highlands area if his native tongue was Scots in 1897. Many Milligans were from Kirkcudbrightshire.

Hi teetime43 - I found a marriage in 1873 in Hutchesontown, Glasgow between James Milligan and Catherine Connor. This could be who you are looking for although if correct by 1881 it looks like James had died and Catherine (dressmaker) was on her own with 3 sons - William, John and Joseph as well as a boarder and a lodger (probably not related). In 1891 she is still in same area of Glasgow with the 3 boys: William is Dentist's apprentice and John is Plumber's apprentice with Joseph still at school. By 1891 she is a housekeeper and sons are: William - Chemical labourer, John - Electical gasfitter, Joseph - Plumber's apprentice. I can't find a 1911 census - there is one on Scotlands People site but I am not a member.

On the death record I think the place of birth is Glasgow - possibly the person completing it was going to write Kelvin (an area of Glasgow) but changed it, so it is hard to read.
