Looking for SIMPSON of Northumberland, England

Query by starsista

Ralph Brady SIMPSON, his wife Barbara Steel SIMPSON ms IRVINE [could be IRVIN or IRVING], and family John, Ralph, Jane, Andrew, Barbara and Richard came to New Zealand on board the 'Indiana' which left Gravesend on 06 August 1858 and arrived in Lyttelton, New Zealand on 23 November 1858.

Would dearly love to find some information on this family prior to their departure for New Zealand in 1858.

Ralph's father, William, worked for HM Customs in Northumberland and his mother was Jane ms BRADY

Barbara was born c 1816 to John Hennel IRVIN/E and Jane IRVIN/E ms HILL. For some reason the IGI had John as John Hannll IRVIN on his marriage to Jane HILL and the date was 21 November 1801, it now has the spelling Hannall and the date 12 July 1801. John IRVIN may have been in the Royal Navy.

I have quite a bit of information on this family since their arrival in New Zealand.

Thank you.

Ralph, Barbara & William not born in Parish, John born in Parish, consistent with 1851 Census

Thank you.

I, too, haven't found a marriage for Ralph and Barbara, yet.

William SIMPSON, appears to be the eldest son in the census and I wonder whether he died prior to the departure of his family, in 1858, or did he choose to stay? He did not emigrate to New Zealand.

I have also found in Papers Past [http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast], the following:
Timaru Herald, Volume VI, Issue 184, 6 March 1867, Page 2
DEATH.
On the 9th December, 1866, at the residence of her son, Jane Simpson, 87 years of age, widow of the late Mr Wm. Simpson, of Her Majesty's customs, North Shields, Northumberland, England.

From this I find Jane emigrated to New Zealand, probably after the death of her husband. She is a widow in the 1861 census with daughter Margaret and I have been unable to find her emigration record.

Do you have any other details for Jane?

Can you post the 1861 Census details please, so that I know I'm looking for the right Jane Simpson.

You may be right in that William died before they left England there is this death - middle name same as Ralph

Deaths Dec 1851 (>99%)
Simpson William Brady Tynemouth 25 309

again the death certificate would be the only way to get more details, it may shed more light on his mother Barbara.

Hi

The info I have found from the 1861 census is this:
Name: Jane Simpson
Age: 86
Birth: abt 1775
Relation: Head
Born: Cullercoates, Northumberland, England
Town: Tynemouth
County: Northumberland
Street Address: Church Road
Household Members:
Name Age
Jane Simpson 86
Margaret Simpson 38

In the 1851 census Jane and Margaret lived with Elizabeth Ogle age 46 who was another daughter of Jane. They lived in Stephenson Street on the west side of the street. In both census, Jane is blind and in the 1851 census it is stated she is a pauper and a widow. It looks as though Elizabeth is a widow also and her occupation is listed as a seamstress.

As you say, I will likely need to get a certificate in order to check more information regarding this family.

Ralph had a brother William Brady Simpson, b. about 1813. This death could well be his. Thank you for that information.

I will need to do more research to see whether I can find what happened to William, son of Ralph Brady and Barbara SIMPSON.
