THOMAS NOBLE TO POLICE
MARRIED WIDOW WHILE WIFE WAS
STILL ALIVE
" I WANT to give myself up for bigamy. I want
.* you to arrest me," said Thomas William
Edward Noble, laborer, of Pirie, to Det. Evans
at the Police Station.
Before Messrs. G-. M. Martin and A. J. Edwards
iff the Police Court yesterday Noble pleaded guilty to
a charge of bigamy.
He was committed for sentence at 'Gladstone Cir
cuit Court. .
NOBLE was charged with, having
married Rose Thompson, a
widow, on May 27, 1933, while his
wife (Violet Scaife) was alive.
Inspector Johns conducted, the
prosecution. Accused was no-t re
presented by counsel.
Rev. John .Tames Kilmartin, of
?entral Methodist 'Mission, said! he
knew accused. On May 25 last year
?No-bic c-ame to see witness to make
arrangements for his marriage. He
indicated thaf. he hac< been a divorced
man for about two years. "Mrs.
Thompson was outside in a trap and
witness spoke lo her. 'He said! they
would have, to sign a declaration.
Mrs. Thompson said that she was a
widow. Arrangements were made
for the marriage on 'May 27. The
marriage took place on that day in
the vestry Oif the church at 10.30
a.m. There were two witnesses of
the ceremony. A marriage cerlifi
ca.te (produced) was drawn up,
signed1, and issued fo the parties con
cerned.
Accused (to witness}: I did not
say I was a divorced man. I told
you I was seeking a flivo-rce.
Witness: I dispute that.
WITNESSED MARRIAGE
Florence Walters, marriedr, of
IRllendcile, said that Rose Thompson
.was her sister. Witness knew ac
cused. On May 27 last year she
went to. the vestry of the Met hot list
?Church with her husband. She wit
nessed the marriage of Noble and her
sister, and signed the marriage lines
after the ceremony was over.
?Harry Walters (husband, of the
.previous witness) said thaf. he also
witnessed the marriage of accused
and Rose Thompson.
Rose Thompson, of Moppetf road,
Pirie Estate, said that she went to
the vestry of the Methodist Church
on May 27 to .gej. married to Noble.
Two witnesses were present. Aifter
the ceremony she signed the marriage
certificate.
Miss Eunson. of the Women Police
Department, produced a photograph
which had' been handed to her that
day. It was a photograph of ac
cused's wife in England.
ADMISSION TO DETECTIVE
Ttei. Evans: said that at 10 p.m. on
February 3 he saw accused at the
Police Station. Noble said fo- wit
ness: -ivanj to give myself up
for bigamy. I want you "to arrest
me. I,t has been playing on my
mind ever since I cid it."
Before writing down a statement
made by accused, witness cautioned
him in the usual way. Accused- said
he understood, and- added: "I want
to get it over."
Accused, said witness, then maclo'
a statement, which witness took down
in writing. Accused then signed the
statement.
?In the statement accused de
clared :
"I am, a returned soldier. I
married a girl by the name of
Violet Scaife in England at a place
called Derby in a registry office
some dime in 1917. Shortly after,
I left England and came to Aus
tralia. I was in Australia about
12 months, when my wife came
out."
The statement- added that she
came to Pirie and they lived together
as man and wife at his mother's
home at Sixth street, Pirie West.
.Later his wife left him and they -ob
tained a separation order through
Mr. S. J. Warren.
WIFE RETURNED TO ENGLAND
After about three months they
made it- up again and livedi together
for about six months. THs wife's
people in England sent her £45- for
her fare ?>ack to England, and in
.1922 she left- him and returned to
England. There was one child, ami
she took it with her. He had not
received' any letters from her for
about six years.
Accused stated that he married
Rose Thompson on May 27 last year.
"I knew I was married whsn I
married Rose fTfiompson," added'
the statement by accused. "Rose
Thompson knew that I was a
married man when I married' her.
She knew my wife, and I also
told her that I was married."
INTERVIEW WITH WIDOW
On the same night as accused gave
himself up, witness (Det. (Evans)
said he saw Rose Thompson at the
Police Station and; questioned :her
concerning the marriage between her
and Noble. Witne&s- first cautioned
Mrs. Thompson. She said: "You
don't want. ;to take much notice of
Tom. There are times when I think
he is not all there." She then made a
statement and signed it.
Witness produced a document of
agreement for separation between
accused and his wife, Violet Nol>le"
Accused had admftted that- it- was a
separation between him and his wife.
fleorge Clifford; Leaker (clerk exf
Ihe court) produced a complaint of
Noble v. Noble, and evidence taken in
the case on March 20, 1920. In the
evidence Violet Noble had said that
she was married to her husband in
1917 in England.
Accused pleaded guilty and was
committed for sentence. Bail was
allowed. ~

Martn, TWEN is a possible grandfather of my partner, DNA testing and results on FTDNA, MyHeritage, 23andme and AncestryDNA has eliminated most of the Noble boys born between 1880 and 1895. Hi, I'll ask if one of the cousins we know has a photo of TWEN, a 2nd cousin lived near him in Port Pire, SA but has not mentioned it to her daughter who we know about from her high school days.
