Looking for Whelans in Newfoundland/Nova Scotia/Ireland

Query by katie_whelan1986

I am researching my husband's Whelan family and can't get further than 1860. I have his great great g/f David Whelan born 1860 in Spaniards Bay, Newfoundland and married to Margaret Goss. Their children are: Elizabeth b. 1872, John Thomas b. 1880, Agnes b. 1890, James Patrick b. 1885, Lucy b. 1886, Alice b. 1890 and Susan and Mary with no birthdates. My husband says his family came from Ireland and may have changed their name from Phelan or O'Phelan. Having a hard time finding connections as there are so many Whelans and Whalens. Any help appreciated.

Hi Katie,
I am related to a Matthew Whelan from Spaniard's Bay, as he was my great great grandfather. His wife was fanny Ryan. I believe he also had a first wife named Alicia Delaney. I am still researching to be able to prove this.
I did find a will for a Walter Phelan. He had several children, two of which were brothers named Matthew and David. I can't prove that this will is talking about my great grandfather, but it could be. Also could be your David Whelan.
I would love to chat with you about this. My email address is Bailey.j@telus.net
Cheers,
Jenn
