Journal by suzieq69

My G/G/G Grandfather Benjamin KENT, led a very interesting life, but it is making it hard for me to track his family! He was originally in the Navy, then was nominated to the Coast Guard Service from HMS Southampton with a first posting to Youghal on 12 Feb 1833 (175/16-72)
His following postings were: 10 Oct 1834 to Helvick Head (175/16-70)
17 June 1835 promoted to Commissioned Boatman (175/18-69)
20 Nov 1838 to Youghal (175/18-71)
20 June 1840 to Greenway, England (175/6-243)
11 July 1840 to Birling Gap (175/7-217)
4 Oct 1848 to Holywell (175/7-215)
16 July 1850 to Hobb Head following promotion to Chief Boatman (175/7-777)
9 April 1860 to Burnham (175/7-641)
30 June 1860 pensioned (under Greenwich scheme)

His details are: Benjamin Larkin KENT (born 1804) Rainham, Faversham, Kent (his parents are Stephen KENT m Mary someone - don't know surname)
Married: Mary Martha BRIDE (born 1803) Gillingham, Kent (her parents are Richard BRIDE & Mary someone - don't know surname)
Benjamin KENT & Mary BRIDE, Marriage Date: 7 Oct 1826
Marriage Place: Chatham, Kent, England, St. Mary?s Church

I am looking for the birth/baptism records for their 3 eldest daughters, born Ireland:
Child 1: Mary Ann KENT,(born England, died England while still young)
Child 2: Sarah KENT, 1834, born Youghal, County Cork, IRELAND
Child 3: Elizabeth Ann KENT, 1836, IRELAND (unsure what County she was born in - but fathers records above indicate he would have been posted at Helvick Head during this time.) **Elizabeth married my G/G/Grandfather and they came out to NZ in 1876 (see more about this below).
Child 4: Mary Ann, 1838, Ring, County Waterford, IRELAND
I have the details for the younger daughters no's 5 & 6, both born in England, Hester & Frances, 1842 & 1844, East Dean, SUSSEX

If anyone has records or information about this family, either ancestors or descendants I would love to find out more and I am happy to share what I have already as well.

Short ancestry of the Paternal, SELBY/SILBY side of my family:
**Elizabeth Ann KENT married my G/G/Grandfather James SELBY/SILBY (his parents were James SELBY/SILBY m Ann BARNES, James parents were John SELBY/SILBY m Elizabeth LANCE, John's parents were James SELBY m we don't know); James SILBY/SELBY & Elizabeth Ann KENT immigrated to NZ in 1876 with their 8 children. Their son James Kent Silby married Harriet Sarah CATANACH (her parents were Alexander CATANACH m Fanny DAKIN, and Alexanders parents were Alexander or Alexr. CATANACH m Mary Ann ROSS, and Alexr.s parents were James CATANACH m Elizabeth CLARK, James' parents were John CATANACH m Mary COOK, John's parents were Alexander CATANACH m Margret THOMSONE); James Kent SILBY & Harriet Sarah SILBY son Cecil SILBY married Ismay SAYER (her parents were Frank SAYER m Emily Alice JACKSON, Frank's parents were Richard Nicholas SAYER m Hester BLAKE, Richard Nicholas' parents were Richard "Burgess" SAYER m Jemima OXENHAM - who had previously married a Coglen; Richard or Burgess as he was known, parents were Richard SAYER m Sarah we don't know, and Jemima's parents were John OXENHAM m Elizabeth NORMAN). I am directly descended from this line.

Hi there
We share a common ancestor in Benjamin Kent. I have also being trying to research this branch of the family and came across your post via a google search. James Selby/Silby and Elizabeth Ann Kent are my great great great grandparents. Their daughter Lillian Kent Silby b 1863 (older sister of James Kent Silby) married my great great grandfather Albert Edward Whitehead and they lived in Palmerston North, NZ

Also to let you know that I think Richard Bride's wife was Mary Bowles b approx 1780 not sure where

Oh wow! Thanks for the information and contact. I have been working on this one for a bit now and while I have now got a little more information, I have still not found the missing brides - ie: who Benjamin Kent's mother was, etc. I have also not had any break-thru's in the looking for birth records. However, it is great to "meet" a fellow cousin. Do you have an Ancestry Tree? Would love to catch up with you more and to share our common family history in more detail. Cheers, Suzie
