looking for Marshdale in New Zealand (previously Jansen / Sorensen ex Denmark)

Query by Christine02

Jens Peter Jansen (b. 18 Feb 1877 in Bunnythorpe, NZ - d. 16 Jan 1946 in Auckland, NZ) anyone got ideas for ancestors - parents, etc. from Denmark ???? Jens Peter was my Grandfather, whom I never knew - my Mother's Father. He changed his name be Deed Pole on 16 April 1910 to George Peter Marshdale. His parents were Birthe and Christian Jansen. Christian came to New Zealand with his older brother Peter Sorensen, I understand they had two other brothers who went to the USA. On further investigation I find Christian Jansen was formerly Christian Sorensen ... hence the two or three surnames, which has confused this research issue for many a year !!

Samuel & Betsy (nee Thorneycroft)FROST of Bilston, Staffordshire departed UK in 1863 and settled in New Zealand.

Samuel Charles SCHOFIELD emigrated from Hobart, Tasmania, Australia to New Zealand in 1863. He married Agness Dalrymple CALDERWOOD in 1867, who emigrated as an infant from Scotland to Melbourne, Australia in 1850. The Calderwood family immigrated to New Zealand in 1864, settling in Hamilton.

Hi Christine,
I have also been tring to find info on Jansens from Denmark which settled in NZ. I have had look on http://www.ddd.dda.dk/ (Danish Records/censuses) and there are alot of Christian Sorensens/Jansens, etc on there although you will need something like the google toolbar to translate the page for you (unless you know the lingo) Hope this site helps you get a bit further in your research.

Thanks Craig, I've sent you another message with information that I have and hopefully it may fill a gap or two for you. It's just in the 'too hard basket' to do further research on Scandinavian families from way down here but I have some interesting information regarding their lives once they got to NZ. Cheers, Christine

Hi Christine,
There are a number of Christian/Christiansen and Sorensen on this list of Letter of Naturalisation

There are 17 Jansen, 11 Sorensen & 2 Marshdale buried in the Waikumete Cemetery in Auckland

There are 11 Jansen cremated or buried in Purewa Cemetery Auckland

It is very possible that it was spelt Jensen in New Zealand so searching that name may also bring results

There is an incomplete tree for Neils Peter Jensen here. If you find anyone connected I will follow it through for you, just leave me a message

Because most of the early settlers from Denmark settled in Pahiatua and surrounding areas, a search of those cemeteries may yield results:
- there are 20 Jensen buried in Mangatainoka cemetery Pahiatua
- there are 18 Jensen buried in Mangatera cemetery Dannevirke
- there are 8 Jensen buried in the Settlers cemetery Dannevirke

there are 10 Sorensen buried in that area
- search on Tararua Cemeteries

Christian (1852-1941) and Birthe Marie Jansen (1853-1919 spelt Berthe in NZ) had 10 children in New Zealand from 1875 to 1897:
1875 - Moss/Mads Christian
1877 - Jens Peter
1879 - Elsie Johanna
- she married James Harold Dewsbury Hall in 1901
1880 - Soren Johannes
1882 - Anne Maria
- she married Harold Wooster in 1907
1886 - Berthe Catherine
- she married Herbert Percival Lawry in 1907
1889 - Sarah Dorthea
- she married William Frederick Trembath in 1918
1891 - Fritz Albert
- he married ELizabeth Jane Diamond in 1919
1894 - Frank Gordon
1897 - James Norman
- he married Mabel Grace Allwright in 1918

the (known) people with the surname MARCHDALE who have died in NZ are:
1946 - George Peter aged 68
1974 - Elsie Florence born 1885
1989 - Morin Roscoe born 1913
1995 - Phyllis Esslemont born 1911
2000 - Athol George born 1915
2002 - Honor Elsie (nee Frost) born 1918
2003 - Gladys Ena born 1914

there is a lot of information on Birth, Death and Marriage

Searching the settlers of Norsewood may find something

There is a Sorensn Forum of New Zealand

A search of Papers Past revealed over 480 news items on the name Jansen, 629 articles on the name Sorensen and 4 on the name Marshdale (one for a George)

Thanks so much for that info ... most of which I have and I'm virtually on hold with research for now but always good to have these connections to keep the ball rolling if need to assist others. I find it interesting that Christen & Birthe Christensen became known by the surname Jansen once they had their first child in NZ ?!? Are you in this family loop somewhere along the line ?? Cheers, Christine

Some time has passed since you made your last post - my maiden name was Lesley Jansen, descendent from Soren Johannes. I grew up in the Manawatu and as far as I am aware the spelling of Jansen was never Jensen in any of the family. I would be interested if you have found any information on why Christen (or Christian) came to New Zealand. Information I have found suggests that he came to New Zealand as an assisted immigrant. That does not match what I grew up believing.
