THOMAS died 18 Feb 1920 in Greytown
Wairarapa Age, 19 Feb 1920 - Tragedy At Greytown
A somewhat sensational occurrence was reported from Greytown last night, involving the death of a man named Thomas Maxwell McIntosh, who is well known in Masterton. From information we have been able to gather, it appears that McIntosh went to the township at 7 o'clock on Tuesday evening, engaged a room at the Club Hotel and retired to bed in apparently good health and spirits. At 1.30 o'clock yesterday morning, the inmates of the hotel were alarmed by cries for help and McIntosh was found on the pavement in front of the building in great pain and suffering from injuries, apparently sustained from a fall of eighteen feet from an upstairs window. It is surmised that the unfortunate man fell from his bedroom window while in a state of somnambulism (sleep walking).
He was immediately conveyed to the Greytown hospital, where all was done that was possible to relieve him, but he passed away, during the day.

FREDERICK DROWNED in the Hutt River 21 March 1880 aged 9
Colonist, 23 March 1880
Frederick McIntosh, aged nine, a son of Mr John McIntosh, proprietor of the Railway Hotel, Lower Hutt, was drowned in the Hutt river on Saturday afternoon. He was standing on the bank watching the flood, when the earth suddenly gave way and precipitated him into the water.
* In addition to the damage to landholders along the river banks, loss of life has also to be chronicled in connection with this flood. On Saturday afternoon a little boy, named Fredk McIntosh, son of the well-known hotel-keeper at the Lower Hutt, was standing on the river bank below the bridge watching the flood, when the earth upon which he was standing gave way and he was plunged into the river. Every effort was made to save him and one of his brothers jumped in after him, at the risk of his own life and was only rescued with difficulty. Frederick was swept away by the torrent and when the last train came in on Sunday there was no news of the body having been recovered. Deceased was a fine little boy of about nine years of age.

THROWN FROM A HORSE
- Mr George Tasker Killed
A sad accident, the result of a fall from a horse, occurred on the Kai Iwi Road on Thursday night, the victim being Mr George Tasker, a well-known settler of Maxwelltown. It appears that the deceased and Mr Harry Johnston had been at the Wanganui Show and left by the 4p.m. train. They stayed at the Kai Iwi Hotel till 9.30p.m. when they left for Maxwelltown. Johnston's horse was somewhat difficult to manage and, as the deceased thought he could manage it better, he and Johnston exchanged. The both walked their horses for about a mile, when the horse which the deceased rode began to plunge and bolted. When Johnston came to the stone embankment near the Okehu stream he found the deceased lying on the road face down and with the saddle, which had come off the horse, beside him. There was a bad wound at the base of the skull. Johnston tried to bring Tasker round, but without result, so went to Maxwelltown for assistance and had Tasker taken back to the Kai Iwi Hotel. Dr Howard Christie was summoned and ordered Tasker's removal to the Wanganui Hospital. The unfortunate man, however, died in the ambulance van at 7a.m. yesterday.
The late Mr Tasker was a well-known and much respected settler of Maxwelltown. He was 38 years old and leaves a wife and seven children, for whom the deepest sympathy is felt.

NOTES
* Thomas Maxwell Henderson written 1993 by Anthony G. Flute, entitled 'Pioneers in a new Colony'. An extract follows but go to the link for more ...
- In the year 1840, the London and Provincial newspapers carried large advertisements for tradesmen and women to emigrate and settle the new fledgeling colony of the British Empire called New Zealand.
Thomas Maxwell Henderson, a blacksmith by trade, met his future wife and brother-in-laws, Henry and John Macfarlane in Perth. He was married to Catherine Macfarlane in 1834 and had a son, born in July,1839.

* After a family conference, Thomas and Catherine, John and Henry Macfarlane and their sister Ann Taylor and her husband, were to join the Brigatine LONDON at London dockyards on the 10th August, 1840, for the long and arduous voyage of 121 days to the other side of the world. The journey was to take until the 12th December to reach Port Nicholson, Wellington. Sickness on board during the voyage was unavoidable in the cramped conditions and salty basic diet. A bad bout of dysentry spread through the passengers.

* Catherine's 15 month old child became sick and the ships surgeon, Ralph Johnson, was unable to save him. He died on the 20th September and was buried at sea. This was a bitter blow to the family beginning their new adventure. The Henderson and Macfarlane families headed north for Auckland, arriving just two months before the land sales of 1841. Both families were fortunate to have capital which they had brought with them.

* The township was to be split into one acre lots, selling for 595 each.
Early in 1842, Thomas and Henry formed a partnership and bought a block of land from Dudley Sinclair. On this they built the Commercial Hotel at a cost of 2000, a very large sum of money in those days. The hotel was a good investment, catering for the numbers of immigrants coming into the colony to settle and begin a new life.
The partners also began selling merchandise, ships chandlery and provisions. In 1843 they offered bricks for sale at 1/17/- a thousand and firewood at 4/- a ton. Catherine and Thomas had another son in 1841 called George and a second son in 1843 named Henry William. Thomas Henderson became a driving force in the company of Henderson & Macfarlane and decided to buy a schooner he had seen advertised in Auckland harbour named the LUCIDAN. She became a regular trader to the Bay of Islands in the north of New Zealand

I'm descended from Alexander McIntosh and Margaret MacFarlane through their daughter Margaret McIntosh 1835-1906 and William Henderson who drowned at sea. No birth or death has ever been found for him. He must have died about 1860 as his widow remarried as a spinster in 1863. I guess she couldn't wait seven years for him to be declared dead. Have looked at the 'Peck of Taita site but don't know why the McIntoshes are there and there are some mistakes. Have been researching the MacFarlane and Henderson families, that is the relations of Thomas Maxwell Henderson 30/12/1810-1886. Some relatives have decided they have found William Henderson in the 1841 Scottish Census but can't tell me why he is the right one. As my grandmother was the last of 10 sibling's, grandchildren of William and Margaret, she didn't know what happened to the older ones
