NOTES Taken from pressreader .. what of the tragic tale of Bavarian born Henry Schrick, miner, butcher and baker, who set up in the township (Sowburn, now Patearoa) and his Irish wife and six children? His wife (Bridget) took to drink and died at the Seacliff Lunatic Asylum at the age of 46; then his 23 year old son Henry died from miner's phthists (1886); a daughter died at 31 (Catherine Mary (Murray) 1872-1904); his son Andrew died at 29 (1895); son James Thomas drowned when he fell from the bosun's chair across the Clutha River at Halfway House in the Cromwell Gorge (1908); son Fred died in a shooting accident Frederick (1865-1918) accidentally shot himself. In the midst of all this Henry Schrick himself took his own life (Nov 1891). "It appears that he had been drinking heavily lately." said the Otago Daily Times. Who could blame him? Not all is bleak. His early life was spent in various towns in Lanarkshire and Ayrshire. He started work at the age of 9 in a tileworks at Mauchline, moved to Chapelton by the time he was 11 or 12 and appears to have continued to move around after marrying Catherine Pelling at Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, 22 Oct 1869.
He was working at the tileworks near Stonehouse when he and Catherine decided to emigrate to New Zealand with their family of three daughters and a son. They left Greenock on the clipper 'Canterbury' on 12 Sep 1878 and arrived at Port Chalmers on 10 Dec 1878. Two more daughters were born in New Zealand.
