My McNish family from Ontario

Journal by Barb Minish

My family story begins in Ontario in and around 1851 which is the first that we see the McNish family in Wolford township in the county of Leeds and Grenville. It is during this time that 3 brothers; James,Alexander and William all came from Armagh Ireland to join the many number of families already there from Armagh. Their parents were Nathaniel and Catherine McNish also of Armagh. The 3 brothers settled in Wolford township but sometime between 1851 and 1861 they changed their last name from McNish to Minish. It is unclear as to the reasoning but for many years to story in the family was that of 3 brothers who at a fight and split apart but only one changed his name. Through the census records I found no history of this so I'm not certain why the name was changed. As I search and look at the many lines of McNishes,MacNishes,McNeeses and McInnes it seems we're the only line that made this change. The 3 brothers had many children most of whom stayed in the Ontario region. One of James' son moved his family out west to Manitoba and there are now Minishes as far west as British Colombia. I have done some family tree work on ancestry.ca so if anyone has access to their site you can see my roots. I would love to continue going back through the family history so if anyone has any connections to the Ireland McNish group I'd love to hear from you. Happy searching to all my distant relatives out there searching for the answers to the many questions we all have regarding where we came from.
