Samuel Phipps was my great great great great grandfather. Ettley Phipps was my grandmother, daughter of Martin van Buren Phipps, son of Major John Phipps, son of John Phipps, son of Samuel Phipps. I can trace my heritage back to Joseph Phipps and Sarah Binfield Phipps who came to Pennsylvania as Quakers in 1682. I have read that it is unlikely that any Phipps who came to America ever died in Sommes, Picardie, France. It is apparently a "computer" error that has been recopied.
Some Additional information re: Samuel Phipps
SAMUEL PHIPPS, born in Chester Co. PA., on Aug. 1, 1735, died Jan. 5, 1841 in Worthington Township, Butler Co., Ohio. He moved to Ohio in 1815. A man of remarkable vigor. He lived past the age of 105 years. It is not known if he was ever in Venango Co. PA. where his two sons John and Nathan had settled in 1797. He served in the Revolutionary War. A private in Captain Joseph Johnson's Company. 6th Class, 4th Battalion Soldier, Goshen Township, Chester co., PA. He married in 1763 to MARY MARSHALL, who was born 1738, died 1835 in Ohio. She was a member of a famous Philadelphia family and was a cousin of "Mad Anthony Wayne."

Good work janilye!! There is some information here that I did not have and I have never before seen this photograph - SO I cannot verify it. It does however, look right for the period.

Thanks S.Osborne.
The Somme, Picardie must have come from HERE or somewhere like it.
