hi there,

wat about METHVEN, Canterbury, 90kms from Christchurch

I thought it could have been that, but wouldnt it have said Native of New Zealand, thats why I thought it could be Scotland, but then they wold have maybe put Native of Scotland, cant find him in any NZ geneology, but he sure had an adventure, met MARY McKENZIE in Aust(she was born NSW) had son in LeFroy Tas, and ended up in S/Island NZ then farmed in Wellington and then lived the rest of there lives in Thames, but why would he go from NZ to mine, or did he come from Scotland and passed through Aus on his way to NZ and met Mary, all good questions, but interesting character to trace. Thanks

if they know the name of the town a person is born in they will put that
if it just says 'Methven' it is probably NZ

if they do not know the name of the town they just put the country - that info is usually provided by family

MANY men went 'across the creek' to mine. Mayby then, like now, the wages over there were higher !!

Thanks for that response, I will go further down that track now, and leave scotland alone - I know Johns father was called WALTER so maybe I will end up in scotland again as he had to come from somewhere too.
