I use My Heritage mainly for my research. There are so many John Burges in the UK, but using web site of Marian Coleman (British resident) and UK birth record search as part of My Heritage program, probably it was Frome,Somerset UK.
There are several active Burge researchers in South Australia. In particular, Grant Burge, a well known wine maker in South Australia (descended from John's son, Meshach Burge. He mentions the Northern England industrial area in an article in one of his Winery Newsletters. My mother Alice Coad, born Burge, researched for many years, but never came up with John's parents names or exact birth place. The common thread relating to John Burge, is his immigration to South Australia in 1850 on the ship LOEVESTEIN, with his wife and sons and that he was a noted tailor to Queen Victoria, supplying Footman Uniforms. He had some knowledge of vine growing gained during trips to France. The Springbett family goes back into the 1700's, but John's ancestors are difficult to trace with certainty. Since this 2014 post, I have discovered (by chance one day earlier in 2017) the details of John Burge's parents and ancestors. This was found in the Burge family in Whatley, Somerset, England, published by the McLean family (England). It clears up the mystery of John's strangely uncertainty of his place of birth and birth year, He was born in Whatley, Somerset, England. His parents were James Burge and Sarah (Sally( Sulley. His parents were both deceased whilst John was a child. His mother, perhaps in childbirth. His father, James was a carpenter and moved around nearby villages, building structures, as part of his occupation. His early death, may have been accidental. His children were orphaned and went into the care of one of James' brothers, Meshack Burge and his wife Charlotte, who lived at Corsley, which was given on the 1841 UK Census, by John Burge as his place of birth. He was very young at the time of his father's death, so soon after his mother's untimely death. v as who had children of their own to care for. Corsley, Frome and Whatley are all in Somerset, a short distance apart in a roughly triangular position. Charlotte and Meshack Burge had children of their own, as well as the care of James and Sarah Burge's children.

Dates of birth and death to be added later. The parents of James Burge and Meshack Burge were Henry Burge and Frances Lacey. There was another brother, William Burge. These names were represented amongst John Burge and Eliza Springbett's children, Meshach William and Henry John Burge. Given that Meshach was an uncommon name, this would seem to verify the information in the McLean publication.
