PHILLIP TAPSELL - 1823 -------- 1873
edmondsallan - hello - Tapsell claimed he married Maria Ringa - on the 23 of June 1823.by the Rev Thomas Kendall. It is all so said his new wife left him the same day . Tapsell went to Sydney , NSW, returning to the bay of Islands as mate of the whaling ship " Sisters - Late 1826 .
In Australia he commanded the schooners - " Darling & Samuel " and the Brig "Minerva ". On the 21st of April 1830 , after he had returned to the Bay of Islands . he was married by Rev Samuel Marsden to " Karuhi " sister ,at Kerikeri,A sister of the Ngapuhi chief " Wharepoakaa " On the invitation of the Te Arawa chiefs of Rotorua Tapsell settled in Maketu , Bay of Plenty in Nov 1830 . As an agent for a Sydney trading firm he supplied Muskets, gunpowder , and other goods in exchange for flax .He became a prosperous businessman.
After the death of his Wife - " Karuhi " he remarried a " Hine-i-Turama a high ranking woman of the Ngati Whakaue . They had 6 children . The marriage was solemnised and the children Baptisedby Bishop J.b.f. Pompallier during a visit to Whakatane ,in 1841 . Tapsell was a tall man , strong , and powerfully built . After his premises were burnt down in the Maketu Pa , by a matamata tribe seeking revenge on the Maketu tribes, he went to see his business principals in Sydney and they ended the Partnership with him . Another merchant , Frederick Peterson agreed to employ him and at Whakatane he entered into another partnership with " John Middlemass " his business did not flourish like it had before and he was just making ends meet .
In 1848 tapsell applied for work as a pilot for the East coast / Bay of Plenty , and this was his future work for some time . In 1886 he petitioned the Governor for a pension . His request was sent to New South Wales and was not further acknowledged . Phillip Tapsell died at Maketu on the 6th Aug- 1873 and was buried in the Wharekahu cemetery - - till we meet again - Regards - edmondsallan
