RE --> " Looking for - SHUMATE- Virginia - USA- ( Debbi47 ) 1/6/2011

Journal by edmondsallan

Debbie --> you said you are just starting on your family tree'. May I respectfully suggest a working model to follow and some ancestral steps to be put into place . First lets take a look at what we have found '
( a ) We at this stage only found one name of a bigger family. it is a basic starting point . proven as it is possible to get as we are reliant on others doing their entries correctly . Lets look further into what we have . My experience shows me " SHUMATE " was a French sur name. so we have come from way back in France --> Forward to 1809 . At this stage in your search and beginning may I suggest to leave the rest of the ancestry in France alone. Go back to it later and you may need some assistance .
( b) If we follow this particular family / person, is it the person we are trying to link up with your ancestry ???? - We can also see that from its beginning in Virginia USA , it is starting to split away from that area in general - example -( ie ) this Benjamin Shumate was born in South Carolina . If you are not careful you could be chasing your own tail for years trying to find answers
( c ) What tools do we need _
(1 ) a good " FREE " website extra large with huge info available - world wide . Other sites also come into it. Base tools
(2 ) website - Familysearch.org / ancestry.com / Tribalpages.com
Their are many others . we are only setting up the base '
( 3 ) It is important to Know how each website and their catergories work -
( ie ) familysearch.org .

All sources- great to find a sur name with some base data

Ancestral - the code letters after each name assist to know whether this person you have on the screen is of the same family in general and they do change - however they still usually have the first 6 letters and numbers the same - generally - ( If they are different you could be heading ino another- branch

Census _ is great for finding some one and theothers usually in their family and ages - sometimes occupations and where they were born Be careful what date of census you use that it is in the right age group

International - excellent to sort out places / counties / countries etc'

Pedigrees - Usually goes back further than other catergories and usually has some excellent family trees going back in the past

Death index _ excellent to pick up a person , ( Note _--their are many death websites you can use freely )

You now have a general base of knowledge to work from A very small part of a huge ,huge , world of ancestry . You will note also . I have only shown you are few of many websites that as you get more experience you can use . Be wary of the ones who say they are free - then when you are well in-- Pay up front !!!

Find the full name / BDM'S on the relation before you start/ as much info as possible . If you get lost / stonewalled and anything else you can think of - stop - make a cuppa - keep cool - go back to a reliable / proven point / entry and start again . never give in !!!
Time is always their . whether you us it up fast or slow . And the next day , the sun comes up -- and goes down again and so on . All the best. I Hope this brief ancestry search model will assist you . if not just throw it in the can and make a start . This website is one of the best . The members really do go out of their way to assist other members ' Good hunting !!! and welcome to one of the greatest
research subjects in the world - " ANCESTRY " !!!

Debbie-Giles Co. Virginia is home to a number of Shumates, as is southeast WV which was part of VA until 1863. Can I help with Courthouse lookups? lindsidelass

Hi, I'm Brenda and new to the family history research and this site. Thanks for the info about the "working model". I've finished tracking my great-grandmother's line to Alsace because much of the work had already been done and well-documented. Now I would like to find out more about my grandfather, Chester Shumate, whom I never met. He and my grandmother divorced when my mother was 5, then my grandmother and her new husband moved to South Arkansas so I have nothing except a name, so far. I know he married Edna Young in Logan County, AR around 1928 and they had three children but I have no information about where he went, or where he came from.
Thank you.
