Robert Chance, Montgomery County,Tennessee

Query by tennsherry

My Great,Great Grandfather was Robert Chance born 1825-27 in Tennessee. His Mother was Harriet Elizabeth Nolan also from Montgomery County,TENN.Robert Chance married Julia Anna Birdwell. Their daughter Rebecca Elizabeth Chance (incorrectly called "Bettie" in census records)and Rebbecca married James R. Sanford.
My query is this: Who was Robert Chance's father? His mother married 3 times and Robert was the son of her first marriage to a "Chance".Does anyone have any info on "Chance" lineage who were in Tennessee or the deep south ?

Thank You,
Sherry in Tennessee

My Grandmother was a Chance and, I am working on the Chance line. My Chances were in TX,LA,GA,OK. If your gggrandfather was a Chance we are related in some way. Hilda Chance now deceased wrote a book on the Chance's yrs. ago and, some were lucky enough to get this book on a discount, I was not one of them. Hilda sent my sister a letter, letting her know these could be bought by the Chance relations etc. My sister not being interested in ancestry neglected to let anyone else know about this (not her intention). She still had this information so, I called Hilda hoping this offer was still good but, all the books had been sold. Hilda's health was starting to fail at that time, being in her 80's (I did not know about her health) Hilda offered to give me her research papers (copy) but,I never heard or recieved anything, Hilda was dying. Hilda seemed to be a very nice lady and I thank her for all her efforts. The book is available at some libraries, I have never tried to get it. I will try to look up some info. through my Chances but, I can't promise anything. If you type in Hilda Chance for search you will find some info. on the Chances.

Thank You so much for your info.I have posted a query with the Montgomery County Tennessee Historical Society but have gotten no reply from anyone and that is so strange as Robert and Julianna Chance had several children. A lot of people still are not interested in Ancestry. Also,in the Montgomery County Census there is listed a Mahala Chance, widow of Thomas Chance and she is buried in Myers Cemetery in the same plot as Robert, his wife, and his daughter. She must be related to him,but is NOT his Mother and too young to be his Grandmother. I can't figure out her connection to Robert as she is not listed in his household, but in her own. The name Mahala is a Native American name meaning "Strong Woman". In the research site "Fold3" I once got a message that they had 135 records for Robert Chance among their Native American records. That does not mean they are for my GG Grandfather for sure, but some could be.Have your heard that there could be Native American blood in your Chance Line ? My Grandmother, his Grand daughter had a olive complexion and black straight hair and so did my Aunt and Uncle, her children. My own Mother and the other sister were fair, blue eyed and blonde like the Henry Clan from Scotland. Any info you can uncover will be very appreciated by me. The Chance Name was very prevalent in England. Once my Mother mentioned that we had an Italian connection thru the Chance line (Maybe not Native American at all). Do you think your line could have Italian Lineage ?

No Italian in my line that I have heard of. My Chance line came from England, as a matter of fact all Chances were from England unless adopted into the family etc. Yes, I,was told my Grt. Grandfather was half Cherokee but, have never found any proof of this. My Grandmother had black straight hair and, almost black eyes when she was younger. My Chance Grandmother spoke little of her family. My Chances were mostly short in stature. I started my ancestry on Chances yrs. ago and, it took me forever to find out anything. Even my Mom could tell me very little, Grandma was already gone by then and, I didn't become interested in ancestry until she was gone. I mostly have my basic Chance line but, like I said my side I have back to GGGGG Grandparents. I have heard of a Chance that was Cherokee but, not in my line, seems like it was a William Chance. By the way, Bettie is a nick name for a lot Elizabeths in that era. Forgot to tell you, my mother and all her siblings were rather dark skinned. I will keep in touch and, do some browsing through my paper work on Chances, give me a day or 2.

Just read your new comment and could not believe the similarities of physical "Chance" family features. My G Grandmother,Rebecca E. Chance (Sanford) was only 4ft.10 ins. tall and her daughter, my Grandmother was only 4ft.11 ins. tall. They were very short in stature also.My Grandmother had dark eyes as well. However,my G Grandmother Chance was fair like her Mother's people, the English BIRDWELLS.I never knew My G Grandmother. It is so frustrating that Tennessee kept such poor records. It wasn't even a law that death records be recorded in Tennessee until 1908. And why didn't I ask more family questions when everybody was still alive?? I do know where I can read Hilda Chance's book. There is a copy of it in The Tennessee State Library and Archives and it has a call number.I have only been researching my CHANCE line for 2 years and it has been very difficult also.I can only go to Robert Chance and that's it.Thanks for all your wonderful info.
