6 Jan 1906 The cabled news of the death in an Francisco of Arthur Brabant, formerly a law clerk in the office of Devore and Cooper, came as a great surprise. He was a son of Mr H. W. Very shortly after his marriage, he made a hasty and unexpected departure for America, and, though it was reported recently that he was returning to Auckland, the intention, if it existed, was never carried out

H. W. Brabant, Resident Magistrate, Opitiki, Bay of Plenty, writes, 24th June:- "Hauhauism appears to be dying out and I think the natives are now recovering from the license and immoral habits engendered by it and in a great measure have returned to their former customs and ideas. Christian baptism is now sought for their children by those who only a few years or months ago professed Hauhauism and Christian worship i snow the custom at many settlements. No crimes of any importance, which could be traced to the native race, have been reported to me. I regret to have to state, however, that drunkenness is very prevalent amongst them, the chiefs in some cases being lamentably addicted to it. There is also just now a great wish to establish amongst themselves licensed houses for the sale of fermented and spirituous liquors."

Opotiki The Ohiwa Regatta came off to-day with indifferent success as a regatta, but thoroughly satisfactory as a day's amusement. The unfavourable weather had raised such a sea on the coast as prevented any whaleboats from coming. The programme was, therefore, altered to canoe races, swimming matches, &c. The attendance was considerable, both from Opotiki and Whakatane. The fair sex was also strongly represented .. The duck hunt was a most laughable farce and was heartily enjoyed .. The accommodation, amusements and refreshments, provided by Mr Rushton of the Gerry Hotel, were more creditable. The company returned home the same evening, thoroughly satisfied with the day's amusements. Great praise is due to Messrs H. W. Brabant, R. King, J. R. Rushton, Thomas Dawson, James Kelly and S. Bates, for their exertions in satisfactorily fulfilling their duties as stewards.

Bay of Plenty Times, 20 April 1876
It is with considerable satisfaction that we announce the appointment of H. W. Brabant, Esq., for some years past Resident Magistrate and Native Officer in the Opotiki district, to the offices of Resident Magistrate and Native Officer in the Tauranga district. Mr Brabant is an old, tried and highly thought-of civil servant and is universally respected by both Europeans and natives. We have long wished to see the military and judicial departments disconnected, an amalgamation of the two being highly prejudicial to the public interests; while as to the necessity for a change in the personnel of the Native Department in Tauranga, we have written forcibly on more than one occasion and are pleased to find that our pen has not been taken up in vain on this point. We congratulate the Government on the admirable discrimination it has evinced in the choice of a gentleman to fill the combined offices of Resident magistrate and Native Officer in this district and Mr Brabant on the fact of his appointment.

Bay of Plenty Times, 6 May 1876
We hear, with considerable regret, that H. W. Brabant, Esq., who has so worthily occupied the Magistrate's Bench here during the past five years, is about to be removed to Tauranga. This will be a great and serious loss to Opotiki in many respects, for a better settler, or a more just and pains-taking Magistrate we could not have. The various tribes of natives along the coast, over whom he has obtained almost unbounded influence, will miss him greatly.
I am glad to be able to say that Captain Preece, Z. C., has arrived here to take charge of native affairs, vice H. W. Brabant, Esq., promoted.

Bay of Plenty Times, 21 July 1876

19 May 1915 - HEROES of the DARDANELLES
... Lieut. Graham Reid left with the rank of corporal, in the 3rd Auckland Infantry, but his keen interest in the work and his natural ability were such that his subsequent promotion is not at all surprising. He was the only son of Mrs J. Stuart Reid, of Dilworth Avenue, Remuera and was thirty-one years of age. After leaving King's College he entered the service of the Northern Steamship Company, and subsequently was chief clerk for Messrs Anderson and Colbeck, sharebrokers. Some two years ago he started business as a company secretary and also acted as secretary to the Auckland Merchants' Association. As soon as the call for men was made he and several of his intimate friends were among the first to join the ranks of the Auckland quota. Lieut. Reid was a prominent member of the King's College Old Boys' Association, in which he held all the offices at various times, including that of president, also of the Auckland Golf club, the Yacht Club and several other Athletic and social organisations. Deceased had a very wide circle of friends and his relatives will have their sincere sympathy. The late Lieutenant Reid was also secretary of the Citizens' Defence League. He evidently won his commission in the field, during recent operations at the Dardanelles, for a letter received by his cousin (Mr W. Hamlin) this morning, written on April 6, just before leaving Cairo, stated that he still had only a corporal's stripes
