Hi! My dad is a Phelim from Doohoma, County Mayo, Ireland. His mother was Catherine Scanlon. She was born to a Felix (Phelim) Scanlon and Mary Munnelly. She had relatives who moved to the North, near Newcastle. Our Scanlon crew lived in and around the Geesala area (Tullaghan Bawn and Coolaba), County Mayo. I hope this is helpful. I can find more information from the family tree if you would like. My dad's first cousin, Tom Scanlon still resides on the family farm in Coolaba and runs a B and B. He continues to fish and farm. The family farm is one of the most beautiful places on earth.

My Grandmother was Sarah Brydon Scanlon and was born in Lesmehagow, Scotland on Dec 25th, 1902. I have been able to trace her roots back to Gabriel Dunlap, 1762. I would love to find out more and trade information to anyone interested.

Hi Richard, thank you for posting your message. The Scanlon family you mention who were born in County Kerry in 1858(Co Kerry is a lovely place) do you know if they had any brothers/sisters?.
I am lucky that I have been able to visit Ireland a good few times. And to witness the breathtaking scenic views of the country. If you like I could forward you a few sites showing Ireland. cheers Summers

Hi all you distant Scanlons. My name is Wendy Scanlon and I live in Kent England. My father was Padriac (or Patrick) Scanlon and he was from Galway in Ireland. Galway City is near Conamara which is where his parents came from. They moved to the city to offer their children a better life. The place they moved to was Bohermore (check out facebook I grew up in bohermore). My father had 2, sisters Annie and Peggie and three brothers , Michael, Martin and Colie. Unfortunately my father passed away in Galway last week and my sisters, Patricia and Dawn along with my brother Sean attended his funeral. Although it was a sad occasion he was laid to rest with his parents in Borhermore cemetery in Galway where he alway wanted to be at the end of his life.

I am very proud of my name and Irish heritage. If you visit the area of Galway you will find a lot of Scanlons it is a name associated with Galway. There is a myth that the name is a derivative of a longer Spanish name and was associated with the Spanish attack on England. Myth has it that the Spanish Armada was blown up my the British around 1589. The surviving Spanish sailors took refuge by swimming to Galway bay and seeking refuge from the Catholic Irish. The name was a derivative from a longer Spanish name which was shortened to be more acceptable in Ireland. The theory is that there are two types of Irish people the white Irish, red hair or blond and fair skin, or the black Irish very black hair blue or brown eyes and dark skin, from the Spanish heritage????? My family are two fair and two dark.

As mentioned I recently returned to Ireland and there are many Scanlons that still remain in Galway it is one of the most scenic and beautiful places you will ever see if you visit, on a clear day Clifton is said to have the cleanest air in Europe and there are still thatched Cottages, and the older people still speak Galic (Irish).

Prior to his passing my father informed me that he came to England in the 50's to seek work. He and his brothers initially went to Newcastle, Durham area to work on the railways, he was also a bus conductor at 18 years old. He later moved to London where there seemed to be more prospects of work. He met my mother, had us and worked for many years for Westminster Council in various jobs.

I am also keen to meet any Scanlons that originated from Ireland and in particular Galway......where ever they are in the world now!!!

Good luck all of you with your search

Oh my, it looks like this has been mostly inactive. My grandmother was a Scanlon, her name was also Ellen, from the Bohermore Scanlons of Bagenalstown, Carlow. While I also have Taylors in my family tree, it is on my paternal grandfather's side rather than my grandmothers. More than happy to answer any questions.

I'm a Scanlon. My father, Sean (or John Joseph Scanlon) grew up in Galway, Ireland and moved in his 20s to Northamptonshire in England. His parents were Michael Scanlon and Mary/May Scanlon (neé McGowan), they certainly lived in Galway for the majority fo their life but I'm unsure if they were born there. My Father's siblings are Seamus Scanlon, Maura Scanlon and Ita Fitzgibbon (neé Scanlon).

Many thanks to those who have posted above, what I can't understand is that many of those above have not posted a Journal relating to seeking information on their own family tree. My reply today is to megawatt it would help, myself and others if you could post a Journal listing your family names and some brief info, that way we can find any common links regards summers
