I think your Daniel SCULLIEN died in Victoria in 1877, aged 47 years.
Parents named as James SCULLIEN and Mary DIAMOND.

Had a quick look at the records today and picked up five children for your Daniel SCULLIEN and Ann KEARNEY in Victoria.

Mary Ellen, James, William, John and Thomas.

Mary Ellen married Peter TAIT in 1875, and died in 1878, aged 21 years.
The informant for Mary's death gave her birth place as Melbourne, but Mary gave her birth place as Adelaide when she married. Had a quick look for her birth in both states, but nothing came up.

You did not mention what information you wanted, so I only spent a short time searching the records. At least we now have something to work with.

Thank you very much for this information.I had Daniels parents as James & Mary. Anne's parents we know as they are our tree. Dan & Anne arrived in Adelaide in 1854 on the 'Confiance'. Had been unable to trace their movements since then. Family word had them moving to Victoria. Dont know when though. Didnt find Daniels death, so thanks for this. Found an Anne Scullin died in Geelong in 1910 and wondered if this was the same person? Didnt know the children.........is there anymore information on James, William,John & Thomas? I have hand written letters to Scullions in Melbourne with no response. I didnt have a lot of info then. This is how I have found other relations before. This drew a blank.
Are you related this this line of Scullions?
Anne Scullion is my Great Grandmothers sister. She is the only link in the Kearney tree missing at the moment.
Appreciate any help you may be able to give me re the children, Then I can start writing letters again.
Cheers
Ann

I would be looking at the Ann SCULLEN that died in South Yarra, Victoria, in 1910 aged 80 years. Her father was named as John KEARNEY. Sorry to say the mother was not recorded. Ann would have been born about 1830, the same year as Daniel.

Had a look for the Ann that died in Geelong in 1910 but could not find this death.
Anyway, the Ann that died in South Yarra will be your Ann.

by Hallcraft on 2012-03-28 14:37:14

Thank you for this latest information. The Ann I found in Geelong had her father registered as John also, wonder if its the same person (somehow)?
Our Anne's father was William, but I think the John is just a mistake (somehow)?
I will work on this anyway. Will also check the phone directory to see if the Scullion name appears in South Yarra. If so I will write letters again.
Will also see if I can trace the children in electrol rolls
Once again thank you very much for your help with my search.
Cheers
Ann

Children located for Daniel and Ann to date.
We now have seven children, but I'm sure there will be more.
The problem is they never bothered to register the births of their
children and this makes it hard trying to put the family together.

Born: circa 1857 Adelaide. Birth not located.
Died: 1878 Victoria, aged 21 years.
Married: 1875 Peter TAIT.

James.
Born: circa 1859. Birth not located.
Died: 1865 Victoria, aged 6 years.
Birth place given as Melbourne.

William.
Born: 1861 South Yarra.
Died: 1867 Victoria, aged 6 years.

John.
Born: 1864 Prahran.
Died: 1895 Alfred Hospital, Prahran, aged 29 years.

Thomas.
Born: 1867 South Yarra.
Died: -

James Thomas.
Born: circa 1869. Birth not located.
Died: 1898 South Yarra, aged 29 years.

Daniel.
Born: circa 1872, South Yarra. Birth not located.
Died: 1927 East Melbourne, aged 55 years.
Married: 1898 Elizabeth Ann SCOTT.

Will pass on details for Daniel and Elizabeth's children when I finish my searches.
Variations in the spelling of the name makes the going slow.

Hope this helps for now.

This is amazing. Can I ask where you are looking (if you are able to say)
Also are you using Scullion, Scullien or Scullen?
It looks like they have had a change in spelling.
I had a quick look in the phone book and just found one Scullen in Victoria.
Still worth writing to this person.
Many Thanks
Ann

You asked if I was connected to this family. The answer is no.
I'm just trying to give you a helping hand find a few family members.

My sources of information come from the Victorian Birth, Death and Marriage Indexes, and most of my searches are done at the library. Please keep in mind the indexes are not always correct with the spelling of names. You can have one spelling for a birth, another for a marriage, and another for a death.

The names used for my searches were SCULLIEN, SCULLEN, SCULLION and SCULLIN.

Will pass on further details when located.

Once again - thank you for this information.
I have access to Ancestry.com.au at the local library free and hope to go there in the next few days.
With the more recent information you have given me I hope to be able to try & trace some of them through the electrol rolls. With all the spouces you have given me I am now very hopeful of being able to make contact.
Cheers

I THINK I know the family you are looking for! When I get a bit of time today I will check. I do think they moved to Hamilton in Victoria because there was a Daniel Scullion who owned a pub there. It's possibly a son (also named Daniel Scullion) because it was in the early 1900s. If this isn't him there was another Scullion family who lived in St.Kilda. I'll have to get back to you later with details. This is of course if they did indeed come to Victoria because I remember when, ngairedith and I, were researching Western Australian families for one of our projects, there was one there too.

Thankyou for the Confiance passenger list. We have already checked this and - this is our Daniel and Anne Scullion from Derry.
I really appreciate yor contact and look forward to what you may have to add to our search.
Anne and my Great Grandmother were sisters. Some of the family went to US, our lot to NZ and Anne to Aus. Some stayed in Ireland.
Are you related to either Daniel or Anne?
Cheers
Ann

Your on the job Janilye.

There were a few more in the St Kilda area and I expect they may be connected, but I have not found the missing links.

I also picked up the SCULLEN family in W.A. This Daniel or Donald SCULLEN and Mary CONWAY had three children in Footscay and another two in Freemantle.

Mary SCULLEN.
Born: 1892 Footscray, Victoria.

Winifred Josine SCULLEN.
Born: 1898 Footscray, Victoria.

Joseph SCULLEN.
Born: 1898 Footscray, Victoria.

John Gerald SCULLEN.
Born: 1902 Freemantle, Western Australia.

James Vincent SCULLEN.
Born: 1904 Freemantle, Western Australia.

The birth records for Victoria and Western Australia sometimes named the father as Daniel, and sometimes as Donald, and I'm still not sure which name is correct.

I'm still trying to find this SCULLEN and CONWAY marriage.

by janilye on 2012-03-30 21:39:30

here are some early findings;
The Hamilton pub owner I refered to was Daniel Michael Scullion and he owned the Caledonian Inn in Hamilton and died on the 27 January 1915 his wife was Elizabeth Charlotte WOLF. He was only 46 when he died, so, it isn't him but could be a son/decendant. Their children were: Jack, Ivy, Rene, Lily and Frank.

I have more or less ruled out the St. Kilda Scullions. Need more time to look, but at this stage I don't think so.

As for the Western Australian Scullions I did find interesting records. A Daniel James Scullion (a blacksmith at Fremantle) died about the 4th October 1912 and is buried at the KarraKatta Cemetery ( knew I had seen this family before. Look at ngairedith's journals in here and you will find a cemetery list for Karrakatta.) He married Bridget Honora Lewin in 1910. The son of Daniel and Ann Scullion. I got excited until I found the death notice in the Western Mail, with the reference to Fellingshore in England.
SCULLION.? October 3. 1912, from result of accident, James Daniel, dearly beloved husband of Honora Scullion, of 69 Glendower street, Perth. youngest son of the late Daniel and Ann Scullion, of Fellingshore, England.

I'm going to see if I can find out where our Hamilton Daniel came from and have another look at St.Kilda.

by tonkin on 2012-03-30 22:24:57

Well done Janilye.

We now have eight children for Daniel and Ann.

by janilye on 2012-03-30 22:35:53

I'm think tonkin's first post as Scullien is right. Also the children.
It's the only death I can find for Daniel snr. so I'm back to St.Kilda.

By the way Hallcraft does this sound like one of your family?

The Argus Saturday 10 July 1909
At the St. Kilda Court yesterday, before Messrs Stedford (chairman), O'Donnell, and M'Kay, J.P's.
Daniel Scullion, a member of the Williamstown Football Club, was charged with having been, drunk and disorderly.
As Scullion had been locked up during the night, he was discharged.
He was next charged with having assaulted Constable Kennedy.
The evidence showed that the assault took place as Scullion was about to be placed in his cell.
He struck the constable a violent blow on the face, cutting his cheek.
Mr. Barnett, for Scullion, alleged that the assault was provoked through
Constable Kennedy striking Scullion.
This allegation however, was denied.
A fine of ?10 was imposed, in default seven days imprisonment.

by Hallcraft on 2012-03-30 22:42:37

He sure does sound like one of our family.
They were very quick to throw a punch.
Usually first at the bar as well.
A true Irishman !!!
Not sure where williamstown is, but we have a Daniel Scullion in this age range,
he would have been about 37

by janilye on 2012-03-31 00:32:49

Just trying to eliminate a few Scullions and add some;

James Scullion was born about 1836 at Ballyscullion, CO DERRY, Ireland and died age 80 in Heywood, Victoria in 1908 could be related to Daniel and Anne, because he too came from Derry.
His father was William Scullion and his mother Rose.
He arrived at Portland on the ship 'Constant' in February 1855.
He married Emma Priest b:1838 d:1923 at Heywood, Victoria. Emma had arrived on the 'Shooting Star'from Liverpool 11 December 1858.

The children of this marriage were:-
Rose Scullion 1861 ? 1943
William John Scullion 1863 ? 1926
Arthur Scullion 1865 ? 1909
Martha Scullion 1867 ? 1954
Emma Emmie Scullion 1870 ? 1920
Ernest James Scullion 1878 ? 1961

I would like to think Ballyscullion would have records of all their Scullions.

by janilye on 2012-03-31 01:13:55

Ernest James Scullion 1878-1961 also died in Hamilton so it seems as though they were all related.
The Daniel in court is Daniel Scullion b. 1887 in St.Kilda the son of James Scullion and Bridget COLLINS this Daniel died in St.Kilda in 1949.
The problem is the irish naming pattern everyone is named after the father and grandfath. In 1903 there are 3 James Scullions all of voting age. St. Kilda, Hamilton and Heywood.
I have to go out. I'll have another look for you later Ann.

Thanks
I had a quick look throught the sites I have but cant find anything to link Daniel with the above Earnest or Janes. Tried looking for the parents link, drew blank.
I havnt been looking for Scullions other than Daniel, so am not familiar with this lot. Will have a look at Ancestry when I get to the library & see if I can locate a link

I've just come across this website and your queries about the Scullions from St Kilda. James Scullion (snr) married to Bridget Collins came from Ballyscullion East, Antrim and his parents were Daniel and Bridget Scullion nee O'Donnell. I hope this will help.

by Hallcraft on 2012-07-09 00:00:44

Thank you, I have now made contact with descendants of Dan & Anne.
