Searching for Mary (Mare) Moko, NZ circa 1840

Journal by Darch

My great grandfather was John Stalyards Archer. His marriage certificate shows he was born to Mary Moko and John Archer (a sea captain)
in 1840, NZ. Family stories suggest this may have been around the Bay of Islands, and there are other stories about a shipwreck in which
his father died. John Stalyards Archer arrived in NSW in the early 1850's. He married Mary Cameron in Yass, NSW in 1868, and died there in 1901.

Dear Darch

I believe John Stalyards Archer was my great great (?) grandfather. This was on my father's side of the family.
My mother has been conducting some research particularly into the 'story' that John had married a maori princess. It appears Mary may certainly have been of maori origin but possibly not a princess. A distance 'cousin' who I believe resides in Tumut NSW has recently had a DNA test which concluded that there was maori connection.
It would be great to make contact with you and even refer your details onto my mother. It may well be that we already have a family connection. I also reside in Sydney.

Hi Pamela, nice to hear from you. I was thrown at first because my mother's name is Pamela and I couldn't figure out why she was responding! My name is Darrell, I grew up in Tumut, as did my father, Donald. Is your distant cousin Judith? I'm out of time but if you could email me at [email protected] I'd love to figure out our connection. Cheers, Darrell
