Sinclair Family Tree from Wick, Orkney Islands, Scotland

I'm trying to find my lineage back from Scotland. In 1965 my grandfather, Roy McKay Sinclair, went to the city of Wick, located in the northern part of the Orkney Islands, in Scotland. He said he was given the key to the city because so many people remembered his family history from that area. He was able to purchase the family clan material to bring back to me. I being his only granddaughter. I've since found out that it was the ancient colors of the Sinclair Hunting Tartan. My mother being the excellent seamstress that she was created a kilt for me. I still have it.
My question is how, or where, can I find the connection from my grandfather to the people in Scotland? My father was born in Winnipeg, Canada as was my grandfather Roy. Roy's dad, William Sinclair, was born 1845 in Scotland, I don't know what city. He married Whilhelmina Omand and her fathers name was John Omand. That is all the information I have. I am currently in the process of ordering Roy's birth certificate but don't know how that will go.

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Wick is not in Orkney. Wick is a burgh town within the county of Caithness, north of the Highland council area, on mainland Scotland. There is a place called Sandwick, on the west coast of mainland Orkney, but it is not a city.

To asheppard: Thank you for your response. Yes that looks like the right one as he was married to Wilhimina Omand and she was born in 1883. How can I get a look at who were Wm Ross Sinclair's parents? Does your information say where Wm Ross Sinclair was born? I'm sorry but I just am not familiar with the web site you are getting this from. Ancestry?

The marriage is on the vitalstats site above, but it is also listed and linked on ancestry.

Wilhimina can't have been born in 1883 that was the date of the marriage she would have been at least 17 or 18 or even older. William would be 38 if his birth year is correct.

The marriage listing above only has those details all the other information is blank. You could try contacting the site and asking if there is any further information available.

Do you have any other details from his death or other family papers, there are a few William Sinclairs born in Orkney Island and also in Wick Caithness. William Ross parents is a hard one, if you don't know where he was born it is difficult to narrow him down.

Scotland People site is a good place to start but it is a pay to view and can be quite costly. You may have to do more digging and find out more about "the key to the city" that your grandfather was given in 1965. Was it Wick in Caithness or Sandwick in Orkney.

Google Orkney Island and you'll find that Sandwick is a very small village on the main Island.

You may have to contact some Orkney sites, try this one Orkney Family History, it has the surnames of the areas listed and Sinclair does not come up in Sandwick, but they may be able to help you find William if he is from Orkney.
