James Henry Snook (1863-1945)

- Catherine had married Mark Vipond on 19 July 1892 in Mahurangi when she was 18 & had 2 children. A son, Mark Vipond, served in WWI as Corporal 13/562 with the Auckland Mounted Rifles. He was Killed in Action 9 Aug 1916 in Egypt aged 22

John was a son of Thomas Albert Humphrey SNOOK (1841-1912) & Elizabeth HUMPHREYS (1840-1928)

John Pollard Snook went to Johannesburg, South Africa as a builder. In 1906 he left Johannesburg for the Airlie Mining Timber Company. He disappeared, presumed murdered in Eatern Transvaal, South Africa. In 1914 Elizabeth made claim to the 310 he left to his mother in his will (this is equivalent in 2012 to $46,000)
Elizabeth is buried in Taita cemetery, Lower Hutt

- a son, Roland Vernon Snook, seved in WWII as Flight Sergeant NZ404960 with the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 57 Squadron, RAF. He was killed in action in Germany 26 March 1942 aged 20. His parents were then living in Auckland. He is buried in Grave 22. F. 10-13., Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Kleve, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany

Appo Hocton was born in China, the son of Fook Ting and his wife, Pae See. According to family tradition his birth name was Wong Ahpoo Hock Ting and he was born on 18 August 1819. According to declarations he made in New Zealand, however, he may have been born as late as 1823. In New Zealand he became known as Appo Upton or Appo Hopton, and by 1853 was officially known as Appo Hocton or Hockton

in July 1884 John (now aged 61), was described as a 'destitute person' by the Christchurch Court. His 3 sons agreed to contirbute 13s per week to support him
on 14 May 1902 John (now aged 79) was in a private nursing home in Salisbury street, Christchurch, suffering from paralysis of the spine when he hanged himself. His funeral left his late residence, Springfield street, St Albans, for the Church of England Cemetery in Barbadoes street
28 Nov 1905 .. from the 'STAR' - We have to thank the Lyttelton TImes and Canterbury TImes for new of the following: Our inquiry (May 14) for HENRY SNOOK, asked for by brother J. in SOuth Africa, has been replied to by Mrs Helen Ridder, nee Snook, in Christchurch. She thinks she may be inquirer's sister
20 March 1909 Helen was found dead in bed at her residence 20 Berry street, St Albans, Christchurch, aged 71. An inquest was ordered by the Coroner which showed she had suffered from lung weakness and death resulted from a burst blood vessel in the lungs. She is buried Plot 183, BLock 21 at Linwood cemetery
