The Argus (Melbourne, Vic.). Saturday 3 October 1936
Rev. Lithgow Tait

The Rev. Lithgow Tait died at his home
in Campbell road, Deepdene, on Thursday,
at the age of 85 years. The late Mr. Tait
was the son of Rev. John Tait, a
pioneer of the Presbyterian Church in
Geelong and was educated at the Geelong
Grammar School, Geelong College, Scotch
College, Melbourne, and the University of
Melbourne, where he obtained the degree
of Bachelor of Arts. Later he studied
theology at the Free College, Edinburgh,
but a breakdown in health caused him to
return to Australia. He spent some time
in Tasmania, and later continued his
studies at the Theological Hall, Mel-
bourne. In 1877 he was licensed as a
minister of the Presbyterian Church of
Victoria. His first pastorate was at Maffra,
in Gippsland, and in March, 1896, he was
appointed Minister of St. Andrew's Church,
Kyneton, a position he held until 1921.
Mr. Tait leaves a widow and a family of
three sons—Messrs. R. G. Tait, of the
National Bank of Australasia, Casterton;
L. J. Tait, of the Bank of New South
Wales, Benalla; and G. E. Tait, of Ver-
mont—and three daughters. The funeral,
which was private, took place yesterday in
the Box Hill Cemetery, the burial service
being conducted by the Rev. T. Watt
Leggatt. The pall-bearers were Messrs.
Andrew Wilson, James Sutherland, J. D.
Gillespie, J. B. Tait, and L. Sisely. Messrs.
Le Pine and Son Pty. Ltd. had charge of
the funeral arrangements.
