DAVID ESPLIN (1849-1931) was born in Brechin, Angus, Scotland
- a son of Thomson ESPLIN & Mary CUTHBERT who married in Angus Scotland

- David's mother Mary died on 14 May 1905 at Drummond as per the OTAGO WITNESS on 17 May 1905 ... ESPLIN, On the 14th May 1905, at Drummond, the dearly belowed mother of David and Charles Esplin, late of Brechin, Scotland' aged 75 years. Deeply regretted
- On 16 May 1906 in the OTAGO WITNESS, the following Memoriam: ...ESPLIN - In fond and loving memory of our dear mother, who departed this life May 14, 1905. Gone but not forgotten - Inserted by her sorrowing sons and daughter

- David's father Thomson (also known as Thomas) Esplin was born 1830 in Angus, Scotland. He was a sone-mason
- Thomson married for a second time on 15 Nov 1861 to Harriet Emily EMLAY in Midlothian, Scotland
- Thomson & Harriet had a daughter Isabella Esplin on 21 May 1862 in Midlothia, Scotland and they emigrated to New Zealand sometime between then and 3 August 1867 when a son John McDavid Esplin was born in Moray Place, Dunedin
- Harriet died on 9 January 1872 at Dunedin Hospital aged 48
- Her children were aged 9 and 4. She is buried in Block 7. Plot 5 in Southern Cross Cemetery, Dunedin with Malcolm McPHEE aged 5 days, (son of John McPHEE & Mary ENGLISH) and also interred is Jane SUTHERLAND (1836-1862)

WILHELMINA HUNTER (1849-1935) was also from Scotland

Davd Esplin & Wilhelmina Hunter married on 7 February 1869 in Brechin, Angus, Scotland

- They sailed to New Zealand on the Auckland, leaving Clyde on 31 July 1875, arriving in Otago 17 October 1875 with 2 children

in June 1882 - The Outram Town Board received 2 tenders for lighting and keeping in oil etc, six lamps in the township. One was from Thomas Tripp, the other from David Esplin who both tendered 1 per week (about $160 in 2010). The amount was considered too high and neither tender was accepted

- David was a Gardener and a Caretaker in New Zealand

- in 1901 they were living in Walter St, The Glen, Dunedi

- in the 1911 Dunedin Electoral Roll David & Wilhelmina were living at 112 Walter Street, The Glen, a km north of Caversham

- in the 1919 Dunedin Electoral Roll David & Wilhelmina were living at Burns Street, Caversham & David was a Caretaker

- in the 1922 Dunedin Electoral Roll David & Wilhelmina were living at 21 McBride Street, South Dunedin

- in the 1925 & 1928 Dunedin Electoral Roll David & Wilhelmina were living at 5 McBride Stret, 2km west of Caversham

in February 1929 from the EVENING POST ... GOLDEN WEDDING, Mr and Mrs David Esplin celebrated their diamond wedding this month (report the Dunedin "Star"). Mr and Mrs Esplin, who were both born in Scotland, were married at the Presbyterian Church, Brechin, on 7th February 1869 by the Rev. J. Scott, now deceased. They sailed from Greenock in the ship Auckland, which was under command of Captain McDowall, and arrived at Port Chalmers on 28th October after a rough and stormy passage of eighty-eight days. Mr and Mrs Esplin settled at the Taieri, where they resided for thirty years, and had a family of six daughters and four sons, of which seven children survive. Mr and Mrs Esplin have thirty five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren

- Wilelmina died on 29 Dec 1934 at Dunedin Hospital aged 86
- she is buried wth David

- he is buried Block 95. Plot 6 at Anderson Bay Cemetery with the ahses of his wife Margaret DICK and Lawrence & Phyllis Maude Esplin
- his wife Maggie remarried in 1931 to Joseph DICK

- Betsy had Violet Alexandrina Fanny Esplin in 1901 in Maclaggan St. Violet was raised by her grandparents David & Wilhelmina
Violet married Lawrence Charles Frederick SNOOK in 1928
- Betsy had Adelaide Esplin in 1902 in Maclaggan Street
Adelaide became Adelaide Esplin Barron
Adelaide married Douglas SIMPSON in 1926
- Betsy had Charles 'Charlie' Esplin in 1903 in Reid Street
Charles became known as Charlie Esplin Pollock
Charles married Evelyn Edith BASTIN in 1929
- Betsy married Fred AIREY (1882-1950) on 17 November 1920 at the home of her sister Mary Ann & brother in law Thomas Gall Pollock, 155 Edgeware Road, St Albans, Christchurch
- He was the widower of her sister Wilhelmina (see below)

- George was a Crane Driver and lived at 2 Forbes St Dunedin in 1957
- he is buried Block 222. Plot 99 Andersons bay Cemetery with Sarah
- Sarah died on 4 Sep 1955 aged 74
- she had been living at 7 South Rd, Caversham, buried with George

1885 - 1919 Wilhelmina
- Wilhelmina was born on 5 January 1885
- she married Fred AIREY (1883-1950) in 1909
- Fred was born in Westomoreland, England, a son of Thomas AIREY & Agnes MARTINDALE
- he was a Blacksmith in West Tairei
- Wilhelmna died on 10 September 1919 aged 34
- she had been living at 55 Moorhouse Ave, Christchurch
- she is buried in Plot 12, Block 6E at Sydenham Cemetery
- Fred next married her sister Betsy
- (Fred is buried in Dunedin)

- married James Ishmael GILDER (1892-1966) on 2 April 1915 St Andrew's, Dunedin
- Lilly died on 19 March 1953 aged 61
- she had been living at 12 Market St, St Kilda, Dunedin
- she is buried Block 90. Plot 67 with 21 months old daughter Lily Lorraine Gilder and husband James
- James died on 9 August 1966 aged 74, 13 years after Lilly
- he had been living at 50 Normanby Sr, Dunedin

1892 - 1966 Charles Young Esplin
- born 18 December 1882
- married Ruby Isabel HELLYER (1894-1920) on 9 April 1913 at Musselburch-Tainui Parish
- in the 1919 Dunedin Electoral Roll Charles was living at 9 Cashel St, South Dunedin with Ruby Isabel (Hellyer)
- he next married Ruby Amelia COX (1901-1965) in 1924
- Ruby was a daughter of William & Mary COX
