Thomas Henry McGREGOR and Augustina Selina (Ellen) WHITE - Mercury Bay, NZ

Journal by jmcgregor

Kia ora koutou

Thomas Henry McGREGOR born 1854 Bay of Islands died approx 1928 Auckland, married Augustina Selina (also known as Ellen) WHITE in Mercury Bay. They seem to have lived most of their lives in and around Mercury Bay/Whitianga and were probably involved in the timber milling industry. Their son Frederick Harvey McGREGOR - one of approximately 15-17 children - was my great-grandfather.

Augustina was the daughter of Abraham Bennett WHITE and Mere TE UIA and was part of a very well-known WHITE family of Mercury Bay. I have a fair amount of information on the WHITE side which seems to have been pretty well researched. However I don't know very much about my Māori whakapapa and would really love to learn more about Mere TE UIA and her life, whakapapa, etc. Augustina's headstone bears the name "Te Rangatai" and I would love to know where this name came from and what it means.

The other brick wall I would really love to crack is Thomas Henry McGREGOR ... where did he spring from and who were his parents ... I have taken the details of his birth (1854 Bay of Islands) from his marriage certificate but his birth was not registered, and I have never found any indication of siblings.

Would love to hear from anyone re the above ... and happy to share the information I have...

Here is a notice from Papers Past.

THE FAMILY OF THE LATE MR THOMAS HENRY McGREGOR, of 16 Kipling Avenue. Epsom (late of Mercury Bay), wish to thank all friends for sympathy shown to them in their recent sad bereavement : also for the kind attention of the doctors and nurses to their father during his illness, and for telegrams, letters and floral emblems received.
Auckland Star, Volume LIX, Issue 201, 25 August 1928.

This does not give any indication of Henry's origins unfortunately.
