BAWDEN: Stephen Douglas, oldest of Stephen and Mary TERRILL, local banker, double marriage ceremony with Mary's sister, Cornelia Rebecca TERRILL and JB [John BAKER] PHELPS in WOODWARD Rockingham home
Stephen Douglas BAWDEN was born in Cobra, Cuba, 13 September 1843. The family was called to Cuba for the tin and copper-rich hills of the island, where father Stephen was an agent for his mining equipment manufacturing company, Sawanee Mining (See 1812 Stephen blogs).
He came to Davenport with his family in 1860 when he was 17 years old, from Norristown, Montgomery, Pennsylvania, a big mining area, via England - possibly Redruth.
He was later the cashier for the Davenport National Bank for many years. He was connected with the Union Bank of Davenport.
He married Mary Ella "Ella" WOODWARD 20 May 1869 in a double ceremony with Ella's sister, "Cornie" in the Woodward family home. They were the dtrs of Benjamin BECKWITH and Elizabeth EVANS MORGAN WOODWARD, early pioneers in Rockingham Twp. Benjamin was a noted banker, bank board member and financier.
Ella was born 23 Oct 1848 in Davenport [became a city in 1839].
Stephen Douglas BAWDEN died 1 Aug 1917 in his home at 1315 E. 11th St., Davenport. Ella was a life-long member of the Methodist Church died in their home 18 July 1932. The family is buried in Davenport's Oakdale Cemetery. They had 4 children, Mary Elizabeth ?Lizzie?, Edward TERRILL, Benjamin WOODWARD, Stephen PHELPS; separate bio blogs are entered.
