Family notes from a Channel Port

The Port in question is Newhaven where daily cross channel services now run to Dieppe and soon to Le Havre.

My family name is Balcombe which has been tied to this town from the early years of the 1800s. Whether the originators of the surname came from Wilmington or Arlington is a question which cropped up in the answer given for place of birth in the 1851 Census.
Further back in the 18th Century a marriage of an Irishman of Cork(Coastal Defence Force) with the surname Johnson, sp.'Johnsen' allied with a local family of Buckley in the nearby parish of Denton.

Fieldgate is a surname which has died out locally, but which had an esteemed career at Sea - places on the Essex coast, Colchester and Brightlingsea - having a history.

My paternal grandfather was brought up in France, his brother became an interpreter on the Quay, but his parents' marriage at the British Consulate at Dieppe is as far back as I have managed to find: Holl. Perhaps his mother was Irish/American, or she could have been from the West Country - Devon and Cornwall - with the surname Easterbrook.
