I've only recently started to research my GIRLING family tree and I've learnt something very important: don't assume just because you live in a family that everybody in the family knows the same things about your relatives and ancestors as you do.

My sister is helping with this project from her home on the other side of England and sent me an e-mail that she had received, commenting on it that it "didn't add anything to what we already knew." Except it contained a number of bits of information that I didn't know. She had assumed that as we were brother and sister we both knew the same things. A quick phone discussion revealed that we both knew things that the other didn't........

So now there is a brief break from my research whilst I get everything that my sister knows but I don't into writing and added to what I already have.

The information that we have received after my sister got my grandfather's wedding photo into the local paper where he used to live has put us in touch with relatives that we didn't know we had, and some people who knew my grandfather from their young days. It has also enabled us to add some names to the photo on my home page so I've added those details below the photo. There are still a few blanks and a few queries where we haven't had a positive identification, but it is looking so much better now.

Researching GIRLING from Bawdsey, Suffolk, England

I have only just started researching my GIRLING family heritage, and am looking for others researching the GIRLING family. At the moment I am finding it easier to extend the family tree sideways into other surnames rather than back in time on the GIRLING line.

My father and grandfather lived in Bawdsey, Suffolk, England, and had connections in Alderton, Shottisham, Woodbridge and Ipswitch which are all in the same area. Also in this area are, or were, the RAF/USAF bases of Bentwaters, Woodbridge, and Bawdsey. One of my aunts married into the HALL family and her daughter, by two marriages, married into the PATTERSON and HERMANSON families in the United States.

My father was William Henry GIRLING 1920/03/03 - 1986/05/21 - siblings Violet, Rose, and Walter, step sibling Fred CRICK

My grandfather was William James GIRLING who I think was born sometime between 1890/10/3 and 1891/08/15 based on his age given in other documents - known siblings George, Emma, Eliza

My great-grandfather was William Girling - known sibling Henry

My grandfather first married on 1915/10/03 to Leonora PRIOR who was born around 1895, and after her death was married on 1925/08/15 to a widow Alice Maud CRICK nee CLAYDON born in 1884 or 1885, died 1960/06/18, who had previously been married (1909/02/27) to Charles William CRICK who was born in 1884 or 1885.

As you can see it is already a complicated web with loads of unconfirmed dates and sibling names.

The photo I am putting up we think is of the wedding of William James GIRLING to Alice Maud CRICK (nee CLAYDON)
