Looking for information on the FERGUS FAMILY of BEKAN, COUNTY MAYO

I am trying to find information with regards to my above family.? The information I have found is as follows: William Fergus, Cloontumper, Annagh, Mayo is shown in the Griffiths Valuation.? William married Bridget McGrath (I think she was living in Greenwood, near Ballyhaunis - but have no marriage record).? William and Bridget had three children, Margaret born 1851, Martin born 1854 and Mary born 1857, all in Bekan, Mayo.? Margaret and Mary never married and lived on the family farm in Cloontumper until their deaths - Mary approx 1925 and Margaret in 1927.? I am not sure where William was from or who his parents were or indeed if he had any brothers or sisters.

Martin emigrated to Hoboken, New Jersey in 1880 (shown on passenger list as Martin Fargus).? He resided with Patrick and Bridget Rathagen (I think the name should be Rattigen) ?in Hoboken.? He went on to marry Mary Quinn and they had two sons: John (my Grandfather) born in 1891 - Hoboken and Martin born in 1893 - Hoboken.? They were baptised at Our Lady of Grace Church, Hoboken.? Mary died in 1894 and Martin Snr brought his sons back to the family farm in Cloontumper and his sisters brought up his sons.? Martin Snr was meant to go back to America but I have found a death certificate for him - he died in Manchester in 1929.

My Grandfather John married Margaret Hunt (from Bracklagh, Brickeens) in 1918.? Martin Jnr (Uncle) never married and stayed on the family farm until his death in approx. 1975.?

John and Margaret had four children: Austin, Martin (Ginger), Margaret and John (my father).? Austin, Margaret and my father John all came to work in England and their father came to England in approx 1930 to work.? He returned to Cloontumper later in life and died in 1964.? His wife Margaret (Hunt) died in Cloontumper in 1962.

Margaret, Martin Snr and Mary had a cousin named Julia Fergus/Fargus.? Julia's father was also called John.? John Fergus is shown on the Griffiths Valuation as living in Eden Park, Knock, Ireland.? He and Julia are then shown as living in Keelogues, Knock, Ireland and then in Caldragh, Mayo.? Julia married Thomas Hyland of Caldragh, Knock (Julia is shown to be from Coogue, Knock) in 1886 and they had three children: Anne born 1887, John - 1889 and Michael - 1892.? Thomas is not shown on the 1901 or 1911 census and there is no record of whether he came to England.? Julia is shown as still being married on the 1901 census but as a Widow on the 1911 census.

Thomas's father (also named John) and Julia's father are shown on the marriage record of Thomas and Julia as "Deceased".? I know that John Hyland died in 1881, his wife Honoria or Rose died in 1875 at the age of 55.? I do not know?what year?Julia's father died.

Anne the daughter of Thomas and Julia emigrated to the USA in approx 1901-1910.? I am not sure what happened to her brothers John and Michael - they may have stayed in Ireland.? Whilst on holiday in Knock in September this year, I met a man who use to know Julia Fergus/Hyland when he was a young boy.? He said when he and his friends used to come home from School Julia used to give them sweets.? I am not sure what year Julia died and whether she also emigrated to the USA or died in Caldragh.?

If anyone is able to shed any light on my family I would be really grateful.

Thank you.
