JOSEPH ALFRED ABBOTT: New Bedford, Massachusetts and New Zealand.
JOSEPH ALFRED ABBOTT was my Greatgreat grandfather. He married MARY ANN HUTT, my Great great grandmother in 1873 in Cust, Canterbury, New Zealand. His death certificate states that he was born in the United States of America. His daughters (my Greatgrandmother) birth certificate states that he came from New Bedford in North America.
JOSEPH had been married previously in 1863 to MARY ANN COSGRAVES who died in 1867. On this marrige certificate his occupation is "Steward".
I have found him on several ships within NZ/Australian waters, as a cook/steward in the early 1860s, all records give his origin as 'New Bedford'.
The Latter Day Saints, Family Search website states the following: JOSEPH ALFRED ABBOTT, born about 1846 to JOSEPH and CAROLINA A ABBOTT nee FOSTER, of Andover, Massachusetts, married in NZ in 1873 to MARY ANNE HUTT at Cust in Canterbury NZ.
On perusing a book about the history of the Andover Abbotts written by Lemuel Abijah Abbott and printed in 1909, I find that Lemuel has JOSEPH ALFREDS death in Wisconsin in the 1870s. He was married to Selona...
I have seen him referred to as JOSEPH ALBERT rather than JOSEPH ALFRED...........Are there two people or has the name been transcribed incorrectly?
Is there someone in MASSACHUSETTS, WISCONSIN or NEW ZEALAND who can help me solve the mystery of the origin of JOSEPH ALFRED ABBOTT who died in NZ in 1888 and is buried in Bolton Memorial Park in Wellington, NZ.
MARY ANN (ANN) CARLTON: In Cumbria (Cumberland) United Kingdom and New Zealand.
MARY ANN CARLTON was the mother of my Great Grandmother, MARY ELIZABETH WILSON who was born in 1873 at 12 Tangier St, Whitehaven in Cumberland. MARY ANN was married to JOHN WILSON (have not been able to find a marriage) and was buried, having died at Bacon Court,Tangier St, on the same day that my Great Grandmother ( her daughter )MARY ELIZABETH WILSON was christened. Which was in January 1874. MARY ELIZABETH married in New Zealand in October 1891, my Great Grandfather, GEORGE HENDERSON. They lived in the Turakina area and Wanganui.
I have reason to believe that MARY ELIZABETH came to NZ as a child with her father, JOHN WILSON, in 1878? who could have been living in Yorks prior to emigrating. I think MARY ELIZABETH could have had a couple of older brothers that were left in the UK.
Is there anyone in the UK that can help me with the CARLTON and WILSON families?
Is there anyone in NZ that can help me with anything concerning this particular JOHN WILSON and his daughter MARY ELIZABETH WILSON?
MARY ANN HUTT: Berkshire/Oxford in United Kingdom and New Zealand.
MARY ANN HUTT, born 1856 at Grove Ealing in England and came to NZ with her parents, THOMAS and EMMA HUTT nee GASKINS/GASCOINE and her brothers and sisters, on the ship "HUNTRESS" ARRIVING IN LYTTELTON, NZ in April 1863. The Hutt family appears to have originated in Berkshire/Oxfordshire in the UK and is connected to the CLIFTON and GASKINS/GASCOINE families. THOMAS HUTTS parents were JOSEPH AND MARY HUTT nee PAINTON.
MARY ANNE was the 2nd wife of JOSEPH ALFRED ABBOTT. They married at Cust in Canterbury, NZ, in 1873. MARY ANN and JOSEPH had JOSEPH HENRY and ANNIE while living at Moeraki Downs(near Cust). There was also a little girl named JANE from Josephs first marriage, who died in 1873. Their other children LENA, ADDIE,LYDIA,FANNY, HARRIET, GEORGE WILLIAM, LOUISA GERTRUDE, ERIC ALFRED were born in Otaki, where JOSEPH was a baker.
I have found MARY ANN on the Library records up to 1897. She was a Housekeeper. I cannot find her after that, nor can I find her 'death' or 'burial', maybe she remarried. She had an older brother HENRY HUTT and I am unable to find anything at all about him. Did he perhaps return to England ?
