I count myself fortunate to have a great grandfather who made family history notes in the margin of a book which I now have. He also wrote an article which was published in 1908 and this also contained some family history information. One such note was a reference to our ancestor Thomas Sweet (1758 to 1848) setting up in business with his cousin William Copland. I could find no reasonable family connection to Copland and was beginning to think that his family history was suspect. But then by retracing all the records I have collected over the years and by questioning everything I had recorded and widening the scope I had a breakthrough and found the link I needed to open up a whole new perspective on the family history between 1740 and 1800. So the lesson I learned was to persevere and trust my elders!
