Antonio Marion and Mary Jane (Montgomery) Gotto Family Cemetery

Antonio Marion and Mary Jane (Montgomery) GOTTO FAMILY CEMETERY

AN-106: NASHVILLE, DAVIDSON COUNTY, TN.
Original Location. 1721 Murfreesboro Road (now Old Murfreesboro Road)

History of Gotto Family Cemetery, was submitted, on May 29, 2005, to the
Davidson County Cemetery Survery project, by Jim Gotto.

Three family members were buried in the Gotto Cemetery. Submitted by Jim Gotto.

Antonio Gotto.
Born January 8, 1809
Birthplace: Italy or Sicily
Died March 12, 1912
Undertaker: Wiles and Karsh Co.

? He was my Great Grandfather and migrated to the United States from Genoa, Italy, when he was about 19 years old. This would have been about 1827 or 1828. I understand that at some point, he returned to Genoa and brought his brother back (two, I think).

I have no additional information about him until when in 1860, according to his obituary, he was in Honduras and witnessed the execution of William Walker by the Honduran Government.

By the time of the Civil War, he had settled near Murfreesboro and in 1864, he purchased a piece of land on Murfreesboro Road (now 1721 Old Murfreesboro Road) from Jacob McGavock, Jr.

The house, which may or may not have been there when the land was purchased, was originally two log rooms with a dog trot between them. The house was added on to many times and I was the fourth generation that lived there and the third to be raised there. Unfortunately, we had to sell the property after my father died so the house is gone.

Antonio Gotto was a member of St. Mary?s Catholic Church in downtown and attended once a year.

He was a stone mason by trade and worked on the State Capitol, the culverts and other masonry structures on the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway.

He worked until he was about 93. When he was 94, he walked from his home on Murfreesboro Road to Belle Meade and back.?

Mary Jane Montgomery Gotto
Born May 16, 1834
Died ca. 1907
Wife of Antonio Gotto

?After the house was sold, the graves of Antonio Gotto and his wife Mary Jane Montgomery Gotto were relocated to Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Lebanon Pike, Nashville, TN. Section 12 on the Fox family plot

.? According to Jim Gotto, ? Aunt Mary Fox was a granddaughter of Antonio & Mary Jane Gotto and she had provided a spot on their family plot for her grandparents before she passed away in 1970.?

Infant Grandson of Antonio Gotto 1917 ?1918
Grave relocated to Mt. Olivet Cemetery on east side.

RESEARCH REPORT: APRIL 29, 2006

Gresham, Grisham, Grissom and other Spellings

My Grisham family is sketchy and I am trying to sort through the many who were around in the early 1800' I have proof bacck to Hartwell Grisham near Franklin in Williamson County TN great-grandfather. in 1840. He was my gggreat-grandfather an my grandmother' great-grand father. most all records for him used the Grisham spelling but those for his children were later spelled Gresham. I have also been told there were relatives in middle TN who also used the Grissom spelling.

Anyway this line (I will creat new journals for them) includes the following surnames:

Leeds, Ormes, Buttery, Gotto, Montgomery and some others.

Simmons and related Family' From Rutherford County TN

I begin with my first Simmons Relative "Proven Records" who was Garrett Simmons. Garrett was born in NC in 1801. Since I have not been able to prove his parents I cannot say when he came to TN.

He married in Franklin TN in 1823 Susan Wade. Susan was also born in NC and was also born in 1801, to Obediah and Abigale Wade.

The Obediah was a soldier on the NC Line during the Rev. War. He lived near the Nelson Creek and Triune area of Williamson County.

Mike Simmons

Wade and Simmons

I have to begin withese because I can't get to my files just now so;

Obediah Wade
wife; Abigale____?

Moved from NC To TN in the early 1800's and lived in the Nelson Creek area of Williamson Co., They moved from there to Shelby Co., Ill. and stayed the rest of their lives on the land he purchsed in Shelbyville.

TN Marriges to 1825:
Susan Wade to Garrett Simmons Nov 04 1823 in Williamson County.

1850 census Garrett and Susan Simmons are in May, Rutherford County TN with 7 children all born in TN except
a son Garrett W. age 19 listed as born in IL.

1860 and 1870 Garrett and Susan still in Rutherford Co, 1870 in District 12 (Murfreesboro P.O.)

1880 Susanah Simmons is a widow living in son's household abt 8yrs younger than other censuses still in
Rutherford Co, District 12.
