SharonDuncan on Family Tree Circles
I am seeking the names MOHI or MOHITAKA, MAPI or MURPHY, and SMITH of Kohukohu.
My great grandparents on my mums side were Hori Te Ngaio HIKU and Ngahuia Hoana TAKIRAU of Otaua, and Oti (or Te Oti) Mohitaka TUHUA and Te Ratuhi Miraka PARAHA of Otaua.
My grandparents were Te Wairua Hori HIKU and Te Ani Paoro TUHUA of Otaua, and my parents are John Peter MURPHY (or MAPI) born in Utakura Valley and Ani Maria HIKU born in Otaua.
On my dads side my great grandparents were Himiona Aporo Pehikauri MAPI and Akinihi HAU (or HOWE) of Utakura, my grandmother was Mary Rose (Mere Roihi) MURPHY (MAPI).
Sadly, nan never disclosed who my grandfather was although we have heard he could have been a school teacher from Kohukohu School, Mr Smith. My father has been called "tarara" or "dalmation descent" on many occasions through out his life, so it's likely his dad was a pakeha and possibly never knew my dad was born. I would like to find information about my grandfather, my dad's dad, to build that side of my family tree which has always been bare.
I have four siblings namely Michelle Tozer, myself, Daniel Murphy (dec'd 1960) Angela Reiri and Jeanette Murphy-Stewart. I have had two children namely Cameron Duncan (dec'd 2003) and Chanel (21).
I would also like to trace the origins of the TUHUA name and I have not been able to go back any further on my grandfather's father's side except to his parents Taka MOHI and Ani Maraea Rangi PAORA. I can track back Ani PAORA but not Taka MOHI.
All our lives, people have told us we are obviously of Chinese descent and I'd like to know why they make those claims.
